The Ultimate Romantic Weekend Break in Paris

Paris has got to be the most romantic city in the world. Whether it’s midnight by the Seine, a kiss at the top of the Eiffel Tower, or just that dreamy French accent, everyone falls in love with this city for one reason or another. Of course, it would be all too easy to give you a run down of the most famous destinations for romance, but Paris has so much more to offer. These tips will take you a little off the beaten track and make your weekend in Paris all the more memorable.

Get There in Style

If you’re lucky enough to live in the UK then your journey could be the beginning of the romance. The Eurostar service from London St Pancras goes straight to Gare du Nord. It’s infinitely simpler than flying and often cheaper too. The biggest bonus though, comes with a Business Premier seat. Book a pair for you and your lover and prepare to experience the most pleasant journey. As well as having extra leg room, a private lounge and only needing to arrive ten minutes before departure, you’ll also be treated to a meal. The menu is designed by chef Raymond Blanc and is served at your table along with champagne. If you’re going to travel, then travel in style!

A Day at the Races

Many people head straight to the Eiffel Tower when they reach Paris, but it’s often more exciting to go a little off the beaten track. Longchamp Racecourse is a scenic and exhilarating setting for the start of your romantic weekend. It’s can be in your favor to download a betting app, as for new users there are often free bet incentives, which you certainly won’t be getting on the course! Whether your horse wins or not, it’s worth heading down to the finishing line for at least a couple of the races, it’s a great view from the grandstands, but there’s nothing like being up close to the action.

If you’re starting to feel a little peckish after your champagne meal on the Eurostar, then you should consider treating yourself to a meal in the course Brasserie. Whilst food at some sporting events can be basic and bland, the food here is delicious and exceptionally good value. The Charolais Beef tartare is heaven in your mouth and with a side of perfectly salted (actually French) French fries, you’ll be set right the way up until the evening.

Travel Back in Time

Whilst the Louvre certainly boasts a truly staggering collection, there are a myriad of lesser known museums to explore in Paris. One of the most charming is the Musée des Arts Forains. Housed in the immaculately renovated Pavillons de Bercy, this former wine warehouse is a true feast for the eyes. The museum has been open since 1996 and it hosts eccentric actor and antiques dealer Jean-Paul Favand’s personal collection. Everything this glittering collection lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in charm.

Everywhere you look, you’ll find another fascinating object. 19th century carousels play jangled music, as swans and golden horses rear and dive. Merry go rounds and old theater sets glitter alluringly; it’s even possible to ride some of the fairground pieces. The whole experience is star spangled and dreamy – it’s a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for adults.

Dream of the Waterlilies

Waterlilies in Paris
Standing in the Musee de l”Orangerie feels almost like being in the gardens at Giverny

If the Musée des Arts Forains is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for adults who are still young inside, then The Musée de l’Orangerie is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for veritable grownups. This beautiful building can be found in the far west corner of the Tuileries Gardens and is the best place to see impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. The real stars of the show are of course, Monet’s Nympheas which are housed in two enormous rooms downstairs. The gentle curves of the walls help you to feel as though you are really captured in the paintings.

Once you’ve spent some time taking in the waterlilies, you should make your way downstairs to see some of the more modern collection. The colorful painterly brushstrokes of Cezanne almost leap from the walls, whilst Matisse’s playful lines spark joy in everyone who looks at them. Picasso, Renoir, Soutine and Guillaume also feature heavily. Though the collection isn’t nearly as enormous as that in the Louvre, the beautiful gallery space and the quality of the works on offer, means that its a true competitor.

IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL WITH CBD GUMMIES

CBD oil products come in various forms. Many users prefer gummies, which are ingested orally. Most CBD gummies contain between 5mg and 30mg of CBD, resulting in a close synergy that will not cause extreme drowsiness. Many users favor taking more than one gummy at a time. However, the optimal dosage depends on the users’ tolerance, age, weight, and physical and mental conditions.

Most CBD gummies contain substances that are extracted from hemp plants. In some cases, when the source is from medical marijuana seeds, it has been isolated from THC. CBD gummies from hemp are legal in all 50 states. However, some gummies may contain trace amounts of THC; the legality of these goods varies by state.

TSA’s screening schemes are focused on safety and are designed to catch potential threats to flight and travelers. Thus, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs. However, if any prohibited substance is found during security screening, TSA will introduce the subject to a law enforcement officer.

CBD Gummies

Gummies provide a bizarre experience for CBD users that sets them aside from other sorts of CBD. Typical properties of CBD gummies include the following:

Edible:

Because gummies are consumed orally, they – like other CBD edibles – typically produce longer-lasting effects than different sorts of CBD oil, like tinctures or vape oils. However, the extent of the impact also depends on the gummy’s CBD concentration.

Concentration:

A CBD gummy may have an A level of up to 100mg, but most have 30mg per capsule or lower. The perfect CBD concentration depends on the consumer’s weight and CBD tolerance, also because of the amount of pain relief they desire. For many people that weigh but 200 pounds and have moderate to severe pain, a 30mg CBD serving is sufficient. Those that weigh quite 200 pounds may like better to take higher concentrations.

Isolate vs. full spectrum:

Whether a CBD oil is taken into account isolate or full-spectrum depends on how the oil is formulated. Isolate CBD oils only contain THC, while full-spectrum oils retain the CBD alongside other non-psychoactive cannabinoids like cannabicyclol (CBL) and cannabinol (CBN), essential oils referred to as terpenes, and other nutrients.

Most CBD gummies sold today are full-spectrum because they produce more well-rounded feelings of relaxation and pain relief, which make them fashionable consumers. However, some gummies are made up of CBD isolate.

Flavor:

CBD gummies are available a good range of characters, including fruity and herbal options. CBD features a naturally strong taste that some people dislike, and a few flavored gummies mask the flavor of CBD all right.

Sugar content:

Some CBD gummies contain sugar, which makes them unsuitable for consumers with certain medical conditions (such as diabetes). However, most gummies have relatively low sugar content. Additionally, most gummies contain a minimum of 10mg of CBD, and consumers won’t eat quite three to four per dose. For those seeking sugar-free CBD gummies, many options are available, as well.

Gluten-free/vegan:

CBD consumers who are vegan or unable to eat gluten products can choose between a good selection of gluten-free, vegan gummies. However, some gummies don’t meet either/both of those criteria. For this reason, customers with these restrictions should carefully read the merchandise label and reach bent company representatives if necessary.

Price:

Price-points for CBD gummies vary by brand and individual product, but most are available for 20 cents per mg or less; this puts gummies on par with other CBD oil products in terms of the general cost. Confine mind that ‘per mg’ refers to the entire CBD concentration found within the container, and not the number of gummies. As an example, allow us to say a box of 30 5mg gummies is priced at $20. This puts the container at roughly 13 cents per mg and approximately 67 cents per gummy.

TSA Ruling On CBD

There is no denying that the rules surrounding CBD products, especially gummies are incredibly confusing. Now the TSA has stated that it will allow people to fly with CBD and hemp products. Even though CBD is illegal under federal law, the TSA, a federal agency, is trying to adjust with the times, updating its “What Can I Bring?” guidance to plead the changing drug rules.

According to the update, parents can bring the hemp-derived drug Epidiolex, which is used to handle epilepsy in children, as well as CBD products, “as long as it is produced within the laws defined by the bill under the 2018 Farm Bill, which authorized hemp and hemp derivatives.

The TSA’s current rules still ban other forms of marijuana. That said, the TSA declares that its officers “do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs.”

At the same time, CBD products that have THC are still illegal under federal law, and as such, are not permitted on planes. Moreover, since at least one of the most successful field tests used by experts cannot tell the difference between CBD and cannabis products with highest THC strain , we are speculating that traveling with such cannabis products is still a risk. Even though the guidelines from TSA regarding CBD have improved, the agency warns that “the final judgment rests with the TSA officer” on duty.

In short, in the absence of federal-level guidance, it is still a state of dilemma when it comes to CBD.

Are CBD Gummies Safe?

CBD gummies and most other products containing CBD oil are considered generally safe. Their relaxing and pain-relieving qualities are well documented, and side effects are minor (if not non-existent) for many consumers.

Passenger with Medical Cannabis

Many passengers who cope with anxiety and jet lag have adapted to CBD as a remedy, even as experts are still reviewing whether it works.

Marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including CBD gummies and oils, are still prohibited under federal law and will not make it through screening.

Also, the FDA recently warned companies that adding CBD to foods or dietary supplements is illegal because it has not been declared to be GRAS, or generally recognized as safe.

The TSA’s updated regulations allow passengers to bring these products onboard legally:

  • Medical cannabis
  • Cannabis-derived products that contain no more than 0.3% of THC
  • Cannabis products with FDA certificate (epidiolex).

If the anxiety of wondering whether the passenger will get through TSA with their CBD is too overwhelming, it might be better to check out whether it is legal at the destination and simply purchase it there.

It is wise for passengers to be cautious. Thus it is recommended not to bring CBD on international flights.

The rules in the jurisdiction passengers are flying to can be drastically different. Flying domestically with a CBD product is more concise of a risk, but there are still risks. Not everyone is up to date on the latest TSA stance. Hemp is not a regulated matter federally, but people were transporting it across state borders get pulled over. Law enforcement officials are not all familiar with the distinctions between hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD.

Bottom line

The other complicating part is that some states may have higher restrictive laws regarding CBD. For example, users can only purchase CBD with a prescription in individual states. Moreover, CBD of any type is not permitted in dietary supplements or food, the FDA says.

If a user is going to travel with medical marijuana or an FDA-approved drug, take the prescription along with other documents in case there are any questions.

If you have CBD products, notice the product’s certificate of analysis, or CoA.

CoAs are listed on the websites where the products were purchased. Alternatively, once the CBD is purchased, the QR code on the label should be scannable, taking consumers to the product’s webpage and the CoA. A CoA will note the percent of CBD and other cannabinoids when it was tested, and the name of the lab that tested it.

As for marijuana, medical or recreational, the best advice is to leave it all at home. Since it remains a Schedule, I drug on the federal level.

6 Natural Remedies that Will Help You Sleep Better

Are you experiencing difficulties falling and staying asleep? Do you always wake up too early and find it hard to get back to sleep or still feel tired when you wake up? These are signs that you have Insomnia. The amount of sleep that we obtain varies from one person to another. The majority of adults get between seven to eight hours of sleep every night. However, many people also encounter short periods of sleep disturbances, which last for days or weeks. These periods usually occur as a result of a stressful event or consumption of drugs that interfere with sleep. Some people experience long periods of sleeplessness that last for many months to years. This type of Insomnia may be as a result of other diseases.

Whereas sleep medications are available for people with long-term Insomnia, these drugs sometimes worsen this problem. Sleep medications often interrupt the sleep cycle. Even though sleep drugs help you fall asleep after taking them, the sleep is not usually deep or relaxing. Furthermore, you can acquire a dependence on these medications, and this means that you will always require them to sleep, and you may develop a tolerance to sleep pills over time. You will need a more significant amount of the medicine to get the same results, and this will make it hard for you to fall asleep without taking the medication. Lack of sleep leaves you feeling tired, irritable, and unable to perform activities of daily living properly. As time goes by, it can put you at a higher risk for health problems like overweight, high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Sleepless nights should not bother you any more since we have some simple home remedies and some little changes in your daily habits without necessarily using sleep medications. Here are some of natural ways that you can use to solve sleep difficulties:

1. Always avoid daytime naps

Waking up too late and sleeping during the day tends to interfere with your sleep cycle. Research studies have revealed that consistent, lengthy, and late naps may lead to poor sleep quality and even sleep deficiency during the night. Try minimizing the length or eliminating naps during the day; if impossible, try restricting yourself to short sleep periods early in the day.

2. Use Marijuana Seeds to eliminate insomnia

The hemp plant, commonly known as marijuana, is a sleep aid. Cannabis helps regulate your sleep cycle and facilitates your ability to catch sleep naturally. THC is a psychoactive ingredient of cannabis that gives one the high feeling and tranquilizing effects one gets from consuming cannabis.

A few puffs make you fall asleep easier by shortening the time you take to fall asleep and increases the time you spent in sleep. Ensure you get the correct dosage prescription from a qualified and licensed medical practitioner to avoid cases of a drug overdose. Once you get a competent doctor, make an effort to select the best supplier too.Alternatively, one can grow cannabis at the comfort of their home by planting indoor marijuana seeds.

3. Perform regular exercises

Exercise for the better sleep

Physical exercise is of great importance to your sleep. It increases your sleep time by enhancing the production of the sleep hormone serotonin in the brain, and reducing levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. However, be careful to maintain a moderate amount of exercise and not overdo it because excessive work out leads to poor sleep. Exercise time is also crucial. Physical activity done early in the morning is much better than evening hours’ activity as far as exercise is concerned. Therefore, consider including physical exercise in your daily schedule or shifting it to the early hours of the day.

4. Lavender oil

Lavender plant for the good sleep

The lavender plant produces purple flowers. Apart from decorative use, lavender has a variety of household uses. Its soothing scent heightens sleep. Research studies show that sniffing lavender oil for nearly half an hour before bedtime enhances sleep in people who suffer from sleep deprivation.

You can put some lavender flowers on your bedroom so that their aroma fills your room. Although lavender is safe, taking lavender supplements by mouth causes has been linked to vomiting and stomach ache.

5. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is an aromatic flowering plant. It resembles a small daisy when fresh. The flowers of this plant are dried and infused with hot water to make tea. This plant is a natural treatment for inflammation, anxiety, and sleep disturbance.

Its calming effect is due to the antioxidant apigenin, which is plentiful in this plant. Its additional sweet-smelling earthy-floral essence, and lack of caffeine makes it an excellent selection for a bedtime drink. Research suggests that a blend of chamomile and lavender tea is helpful in new mothers who are dealing with insufficient sleep. It also reduces the chance of postpartum depression. Take a cup of this tea one hour before you sleep and you may experience a sweet slumber.

6. Massage therapy

Massage works for people with insomnia because it helps you relax, relieves pain, and it also triggers your body to produce hormones that are necessary to make you fall asleep. It is a natural and pleasant treatment and makes you fall asleep in many ways, including pain relief, relaxation, and melatonin hormone production. You can do a self-massage for some part of your body that you can comfortably reach. You can also find another person to massage you if possible.

Conclusion

When trying to find a solution for your sleep problems, you should not be in a hurry to buy a sleeping pill because your problem could be solved using the natural and readily available resources. Try out these home remedies or buy cannabis from a trusted company like weedsmart and save on money spent buying expensive sleep meditations. Remember to seek further medical attention if your symptoms persist.

If Christmas popped up, then you’re likely dreaming of delicious fudge, spicy gingerbread cookies, or something filled with peppermint and chocolate. Valentine’s day? Definitely chocolate and anything pink/red/white. In other words, you’re thinking of what would be considered traditional holiday treats.

So why not spice up your dessert table and try something new? There’s always going to be room for your pumpkin pie and sugar cookies, but some of these dessert ideas are sure to capture your heart. And even the pickiest eater is guaranteed to love some of these!

Traditional holiday desserts move over: there are some new tasty dishes in town. Plus a lot of these will pair nicely with your traditional recipes.

1. Maple Cream Pie

Maple Cream Pie

This pie was born to be a fall treat! The base of the pie is cake mix that is then combined with maple syrup, cinnamon, heavy cream, and rich brown sugar. The brown sugar, cinnamon and heavy cream perfectly accent the maple syrup making each bite truly decadent. Paired with a flaky crust, rich cinnamon cream cheese frosting and spiced sugared pecans, this is the perfect dessert to compliment any autumn dinner.

Oh and don’t forget the whipped cream or vanilla bean ice cream! While the pie is good on its own, whipped cream and/or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream takes this dessert to a whole new level.

Which holiday does this best suit?

Thanksgiving is our personal opinion regarding this one since maple is so reminiscent of autumn.

2. No-Bake Mint Oreo Cheesecake

No-Bake Mint Oreo Cheesecake

If you’re looking for something that’s full of delicious chocolate and cool mint, perfect for Christmas and easy to make, then this dessert was practically made for you!

Cream cheese, powdered sugar, mint Oreo cookies, and Andes mint baking bits make every bite of this dessert taste cool, refreshing, and delicious. And that’s just the base of the pie! Topped with chopped mint Oreos, more Andes baking mints and cool whip make the pie not only look holiday festive, but also adds a perfect crunch to the soft base of the treat.

As an added bonus, it only takes around 20 minutes to prepare then pie and then it just has to sit for 2 hours to set up. So you can spend your time watching Hallmark movies and wrapping presents instead of hours slaving away over a hot stove in the kitchen.

Which holiday does this best suit?

This dessert is perfect for Christmas time! The cool mint and sweet chocolate is perfect for the chilly holidays while opening presents under the Christmas tree.

3. White Chocolate Dipped Krispie Treats

White Chocolate Dipped Krispie Treats

If you have kids that want to help you make food in the kitchen, then this is perfect for you and your family! Rice krispie treats are super easy to make and kids really have a lot of fun making them; especially when it comes to the decorating part. Allowing your kids to participate can make for a really special family bonding experience and create lasting holiday memories that you will all remember for years.

Also the recipe can be changed to suit your needs. You can use white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even color the white chocolate using food dye to create any color you want. There’s also a large variety of sprinkles/toppings available so you’re really only limited by your imagination!

Which holiday does this best suit?

This depends completely on the sprinkles/toppings you use. The picture we used would definitely make a really cute Christmas treat, but you can just as easily use red/pink sprinkles for Valentine’s Day, green ones for St. Patrick’s Day, and a festive orange blend for Thanksgiving.

They’re also perfect for birthday parties!

4. Pumpkin Spice Sheet Cake

Pumpkin Spice Sheet Cake

Okay, so pumpkin spice is a fall staple and we couldn’t resist adding a recipe that incorporated a fan favorite.

For most of us, (or maybe we’re just speaking personally) as soon as the air starts to get cool and the leaves start changing, the pumpkin spice cravings start. Luckily, food and drink companies know this and you can find pumpkin spice flavored everything on every corner.

If you’re looking for something to make at home to satisfy your pumpkin spice craving, then this dish is perfect for you. Sheet cakes are incredibly easy to make and flavorful. So if you’re in the mood for a cake that truly tastes like pumpkin spice, then check this one out. It’s definitely a crowd pleaser!

5. Light Meringues with Pistachio and Pomegranate

Light Meringues with Pistachio and Pomegranate

Ok, this one probably sounds a little strange or too fancy, but bear with us; it’s a really delicious treat. Plus the look of it just screams Christmas.

When you think of meringues, you probably don’t think of pairing them with pistachio and pomegranate. It’s an odd combination we’ll admit, but the crunchy/salty flavor of the pistachios pairs well with the tart, sweet flavor of the pomegranates and both are perfectly balanced by the light, fluffy, sweet flavor of the meringue.

Keep in mind that meringues can be a bit of a pain to make, so prepare these ahead of time. It’s definitely not a dish you want to try to prepare an hour before guests arrive! But we promise this one is worth the effort and your guests will definitely agree!

Which holiday does this best suit?

Christmas is definitely the best time to break out this delicious dessert. And just look at the beautiful colors of the dessert! It looks like something out of a Christmas magazine and will look equally good sitting on your dessert table.

6. Chocolate Pudding Pies with Gingerbread Peeps

Chocolate Pudding Pies with Gingerbread Peeps

In all honesty, we think this is the easily the cutest dessert on our list. The Gingerbread Peep looks ridiculously cute with his candy cane standing atop a pile of delicious chocolate pudding with crushed peppermint. It reminds us of a Gingerbread house in a way and adds some uniqueness to the traditional gingerbread men treats.

This is also something that you can prepare with the kids or right before family arrives. All you’ll need to do to make this dessert is prepare chocolate pudding, put it into dishes, crush up some peppermint for the pudding, and place your Gingerbread Peep with his candy cane in the center. A simple festive and delicious dessert ready in minutes!

Which holiday does this best suit?

The mint and chocolate makes this dish a perfect accessory for Christmas dinners or even a cute little snack while you’re waiting for everything to finish cooking. Plus the little Gingerbread Peep is very reminiscent of gingerbread men, which is also another Christmas staple.

The Gingerbread Peeps also make this dessert perfect for Thanksgiving.

7. White Chocolate Raspberry Trifle

White Chocolate Raspberry Trifle

This white chocolate raspberry trifle is just as tasty to eat, as it is easy to prepare. The layered dessert is one of the easiest to make and you can change up the fruit/layers as desired. A quick Google search will land you 100s of results so feel free to get creative!

Raspberries, cherries, and strawberries are all perfect toppings or you can get creative and layer a combination of these fruits. For the base, you can use graham crackers, fruit, pudding, cream, or even shortbread chunks. In other words, you can make this dessert a number of ways for a truly tasty, customized dish.

Which holiday does this best suit?

This dessert makes for a cute addition to your Christmas menu and can also be used as a treat for Valentine’s Day.

Pink food dye for the whipped cream/white chocolate layers will make this dessert look super cute and festive for Valentine’s Day! Although if you decide to serve the dish as is, the white and red layers without the pink additives are just as adorable.

8. Chocolate Pecan Pie Brownie Cheesecake

Chocolate Pecan Pie Brownie Cheesecake

Okay, so the title of this dessert (and a slice) is a mouthful and you probably won’t be able to write it out in calligraphy on one line for a cute menu option, but you definitely shouldn’t overlook this treat. And despite its long name, the dish is relatively simple and easy to make.

This dessert is prefect for those who don’t really care for graham or cookie crusts because the bottom layer is actually a brownie! This really makes for a delicious, rich experience and the dessert is definitely chocolate rich. A cheesecake layer helps balance out the tirade of chocolate (which comes in the form of chocolate chips, brownie bottom, and chocolate syrup) and the pecans add a saltiness as well as crunch to the cheesecake.

Which holiday does this best suit?

We definitely think this is a Thanksgiving treat but it would also fit in nicely with your Christmas desserts and Valentine’s Day sweets.

The chocolate and pecans really suit the Thanksgiving mood while the rich chocolate, brownie and cheesecake definitely fits the spirit of Valentine’s Day. So whether you’re preparing this for your lover on V-Day or looking for something different to add to your dessert menu for Thanksgiving, it’s sure to fit right in!

9. Watermelon Granita

Watermelon Granita
Watermelon Granita topped with mint leaf, selective focus

You didn’t think we’d leave out the most American holiday did you? We figured that the summer holidays, especially the 4th of July, needed some love and this funky dessert is perfect for it.

Summer is all about watermelons, keeping cool, snow cones, and slushes; the same things that the Watermelon Granita is about too. The dessert uses watermelon puree that is combined with lime, salt and sugar to give it a bit of a margarita style flavor and is then combined with ice to make into a snow cone of sorts.

You can also add ground chile or Mexican spices to make it a truly unique, spicy relief from the scorching summer sun!

Which holiday does this best suit?

This dessert is all about the 4th of July and summer holidays! Everything about this treat screams summer so it comes as no surprise that we’ve listed it as suiting the 4th of July.

However, it can be used to shake up traditional Valentine’s Day treats. While you might not think of watermelon or ice as being a V-Day treat, this dessert can oddly work; especially given the color.

10. Eggnog Tres Leches Cake

Eggnog Tres Leches Cake

All right, so this is a bit of a controversial dessert. Why? Well, people have strong opinions of eggnog and there’s typically no in between. People seem to either love eggnog or absolutely hate it. You probably won’t find anyone that says, “yeah, eggnog is ok”, it’s like liver; you either like it or don’t. However, on the off chance that you’re one of those who like eggnog, then this dessert is for you!

This dessert starts off as a traditional, moist tres leches cake but then gets supercharged by the addition of eggnog. The eggnog takes the role of the leches, or milks, and makes the cake super rich, moist, and decadent. The thickness of the eggnog also makes the cake dense and flavorful.

Which holiday does this best suit?

Eggnog is definitely a comfort drink for the later times of the year so this dessert will definitely fit right in for Christmas and Thanksgiving. It can also pull double duty as a unique birthday treat since tres leches cakes are often used as a birthday cake.

Will this list switch up your holiday dessert list?

While these desserts probably won’t replace your favorite holiday sweet treats anytime soon (or maybe they will, let us know), they do add a unique option to your dessert table. Plus many of these are super easy to make so if you’re like us and make a pumpkin pie from scratch every year (hello 3 hours of my life gone), it’s a  nice break.

Let us know what you think of the dishes we picked and which dessert is going to be added to your holiday table!

Do you have a tasty dish that we didn’t feature? Tell us all about it, we’d love to know what non-traditional treats you’re serving up during the holidays!

Hurricane Dorian Continues its Path of Devastation as it Slams into South Carolina

Hurricane Dorian left the Bahamas after 48 hours of wrecking havoc, hope was that the hurricane would lessen in strength. Unfortunately as it made its way off the islands, it picked up intensity again rising to a Category 3. When it hit South Carolina, it hit as a Category 2 with sustained winds of 110 mph. Hundreds of thousands of Carolina residents who lived along the coast packed up their belongings and fled ahead of the storm. Others stayed, but officials say most of the coastal residences had evacuated. Nearly 250,000 businesses as well as homes were without power before the hurricane even hit. “A lot of the power outages were part of the electric companies manually taking the grids offline in an effort to protect them. Some however were the product of winds and storms that arrived ahead of hurricane Dorian,” officials say.

Governor Henry McMaster also warned people ahead of the storm’s arrival saying that, “it’s the water from the storms that kill the people. It’s the real danger and it’s pretty clear that we’re going to have quite a bit of water on our hands. I want to caution everyone to be careful. Don’t drive or wade through flooded areas. You can’t tell how deep these really are and there could be underlying currents waiting to sweep you away. If water starts to enter your home, get to the roof fast. Don’t take refuge in your attic without punching a hole to escape through. You don’t realize how fast the water levels can rise until they do.”

Officials warned that as the storm continues to strike the Carolina coast, hurricane conditions are possible to last in particular areas even as Hurricane Dorian itself begins to dissipate. The center of the storm is expected to move closer to South Carolina throughout Thursday, and then make its way to North Carolina’s coast during the night and Friday. “Even as the storm dissolves, we want people to know that the dangers aren’t over. Just because it’s no longer a hurricane doesn’t mean that it’s not capable of massive destruction,” officials warn.

Charleston, South Carolina gets Hit the Hardest by Hurricane Dorian

Men is walking on the destroyed home by the Hurricane Dorian

The state suffered a lot of damage under the massive storm, but Charleston, particularly historic Market Street, were hit the hardest. “Market Street is completely gone. Parts were under more than a foot of solid water. The gusting winds blew both rain and seawater sideways, further flooding the area. We don’t know how much damage has been done yet, but we suspect that it’s a lot. We can already tell that some buildings are completely damaged,” say residents.

According to the hurricane center, Charleston Harbor had sustained wind gusts of 80 mph. “Gusts that were nearly as strong as this were also recorded in other parts of the state. North Carolina also reported close to the same wind gust strength.” As hurricane force gusts can cause a lot of damage, both residents and officials feared the worst. However, Hurricane Dorian had more to give: several tornadoes also hit the area. “We’re not sure what Charleston did to Dorian, but whatever we did we pissed it off good because it’s wrecked serious havoc here,” says one resident.

Hurricane force winds were also reported to extend more than 60 miles away from the storm’s center. The tropical storm force winds stretched outwards of 195 miles, covering a large swath of land. “Everyone needs to realize that it’s not just about the center of the storm,” Ken Graham who’s a director for the hurricane center said, “you need to look at the storm as a whole. And in Dorian’s case, it’s both massive and destructive.”

Ahead of Hurricane Dorian’s arrival, Graham said that Charleston could see a storm surge of up to 4 feet. “That’s incredibly dangerous,” he further warned. As far as North Carolina was concerned, parts could see as much as 7 feet Graham continued. “Anything that goes above 3 feet is considered to be life threatening,” he said. “Residents who have stayed behind need to take this into consideration. Also as we’re also going to continue to be pounded by rain, you’re going to also get more flooding. Streets are going to go under and rivers may rise past their banks.”

Preparing for the Worst

South Carolina and North Carolina houses are flooded by the storm

Ahead of Dorian’s arrival both South and North Carolina began preparing for the worst that the storm had to offer. Shelters were opened across both states and rescue crews waited on standby. According to Roy Cooper, North Carolina’s governor, more than 50 shelters were opened in preparation for the storm. 20 swift water rescue teams were also employed to help with water rescues. North Carolina also has sixteen aircraft that are ready and waiting. “We want to be as prepared as possible for the storm and we want to minimize how many lives are lost and the number of injuries. Some people have said that we don’t need that many rescue teams or aircraft but I’d rather have more than we need than not enough,” Cooper said.

Unfortunately, not everyone was compliant. According to Police Chief Daniel House, several people in Wrightsville Beach were charged with class 2 misdemeanors for failing to comply with the state’s mandatory evacuation orders. “I hate writing tickets like that, especially during times like these but it’s necessary. You’re not only putting your own life at risk if you choose to stay, but you’re also putting the lives of first responders at risk. And if you’re on a barrier island, it’s even worse. There’s nothing in your home worth staying for. Nothing in there is worth your life or the life of others,” Cooper said. “And for those who haven’t evacuated now: get to the highest and safest place you can possibly get. If you think that’s your attic, make sure you have an exit area in case the water rises that high and you need to get onto your roof.”

Not Everyone is Taking Cooper’s Advice to Heart

People are walking in the water to save their life.

Unfortunately, not everyone is taking Cooper’s advice of “get out” to heart. Derek Bellinger and his family are just one example of those who have decided to stay. Located on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Bellinger’s home in Kill Devil Hills was under mandatory evacuation. However, Derek says that he is staying. “Were really not that worried about Hurricane Dorian. We’ve been through plenty of storms and we’ve done our prep. We’re going to hunker down and ride it out,” he said. The family has stockpiled four cases of water, filled their freezer with food, and they’ve got 25 gallons of gas on reserve to power the generator. “We’re as ready and prepared as we can be,” Derek said.

North Carolina native Carol Ann Angelos also announced that she plans to stay. She’s the owner of The Jolly Roger, a beachside restaurant that has been in business for 35 years. “We’re going to stay open and serve customers for as long as the power stays on. We also plan on serving emergency responders. I’ll serve them whatever sandwiches I can scrape up by candlelight if I have to, but I’m not closing my doors,” Angelos said. Even though the windows have been boarded up, all of The Jolly Rogers’s signs read “open”.

“Our entire livelihood is here and I think that’s something that a lot of people don’t get; especially those that haven’t been through hurricanes or storms. Evacuation isn’t always the best response either. You can get caught in traffic, run out of gas, and get stranded. A lot of evacuees wait in traffic for 14+ hours just to make it 2 hours out of the city and then what? You’re still in harm’s way. And even if you make it to a safe area, who’s to say that there’s shelter for you? Most of the hotels have already been booked. So we do sandbags, we board our windows, tie everything down that can be tied down, and we pray that the ocean doesn’t rise up enough to flood you.”

Damage Done to the Bahamas By Hurricane Dorian

Bahamas Island become a ghost town from the Hurricane Dorian

When Hurricane Dorian made its way to the Bahamas, the island braced for the worst. However, nobody was prepared for the amount of devastation and waste that the hurricane laid to their small island of 400,000 residents. Just days after Hurricane Dorian, now one of the strongest Atlantic storms on record, images from the Bahamas began surfacing on the Internet as well as death/injury counts and what all has been destroyed. According to the media, the Bahamas is now 70% underwater. “You can’t even see some of the streets anymore and some of the buildings are just completely gone. We don’t know if they’re underwater or they were taken out by the hurricane. Some neighborhoods are just completely gone. Others are submerged,” residents say.

As of the time of this article, officials estimate the storm’s death toll to be at least 23. “The real number could be much, much higher,” officials say. “23 is what we have currently confirmed. As the water levels lower and we’re able to access more areas, we expect that number to raise significantly.” As cleanup efforts have only just begun, Marvin Dames told press that “this is just the beginning.” The total number of those injured remains unclear/unreported.

Marvin Dames, who is the minister of national security, told the media during a news press conference on Wednesday night that they have also begun the process of clearing streets and making the airports available.  “We’ve started with the islands of Abaco and the Grand Bahamas,” Dames said. “These two areas were hit the hardest by the hurricane and they’re in need of help. While all of the Bahamas suffered from Hurricane Dorian, clearing these two areas will help make it easier for cleanup crews, rescue teams, first responders, and supplies to make it in.”

Aerial footage also surfaced that was filmed over the Abaco Islands. In the footage, you can see roads that have been completely washed away as well as debris littering every free inch of space. Splintered wood juts out from damaged homes, roofs are missing, and some houses are nothing but a pile of debris now. It’s truly a sad sight to see.

It’s also come out that Equinor, a Norwegian energy company stationed in the Bahamas, suffered damage to its oil storage terminal… Which is now leaking. When asked how much oil had spilled, the company said “it’s too early to know.” The Times flew over the company’s terminal on Wednesday and reported back that many of the storage tanks had lost their lid. At least 5 of the tank lids were missing. Of those 5, only 3 contained large amounts of oil. The Times also reported that oil was visible on the ground around the tanks, but the seawater looked clear. “Precautionary measures were taken before Hurricane Dorian’s arrival and the terminal was constructed with hurricanes in mind,” a company spokesman for Equinor said. “The areas around the tanks are there to serve as barriers to contain oil spills.”

While it’s definitely good news that the oil hasn’t reached the ocean, it does spell out hazardous conditions and problems for cleanup crews in that immediate area.

How You Can Help

Police car standing on the road to help the people who affected by storm

If you’re located in the path of the storm, officials say that the best way that you can help is by evacuating. “Don’t stay behind and become someone that we have to rescue; especially if you’re close to the beach where the storm surge will hit. It can cost lives trying to save one and you’re diverting first responders to you when other areas could benefit from them. Also, don’t be a hero. Don’t try to save people that are being swept away in the current. Don’t put your own life at risk; leave it to the professionals.”

For those outside of the states, there are plenty of areas and websites that will allow you to help from a distance. You can join rescue crews, send supplies, or contribute funds to help out. Check out the following website for links and ways that you can help:

10 of the Cheapest Travel Destinations in the World

It’s safe to say that everyone (or at least most everyone) loves to travel cheap. Seeing the world is one of the best experiences out there. You get to be a part of their culture, have new experiences, create lasting memories and forget about your 9 to 5 for awhile. Unfortunately, there is an aspect of travel that people don’t like: and that’s the expense of it all. Between hotels, flights, food, drinks, and the cost of activities vacations can add up quick. You can negate a lot of this by shopping around for deals/discounts as well as cooking for yourself instead of purchasing meals at restaurants while you’re out. Airbnb as well as hostels are also a great way to travel on the cheap  but none of this negates the cost associated with some destination getaway spots. For example, you can probably find a cheap flight to Hawaii and if you search around, you can probably rent a room on Airbnb for about $50 a night… However, your trip to Hawaii can also set you back around $60 a day or more for activities. And that’s not including your hotel or Airbnb fee!

So what do you do if you want to travel but not break the bank? Well, many assume that they have to stay local or at least stay within the United States. Beachfront property and cool destination spots aren’t in your vacay future, right? Wrong! We’ve put together a list of some of the cheapest places to visit throughout the world. Not only will these destination hotspots allow you to save money, but you also won’t have to sacrifice gorgeous views to save some cash either. So without further adieu, get your bags and passports ready. We’re vacay bound!

1. Bali

Sunset over Amed beach with Mount Agung in the background,

Hands down, Bali is the biggest bang for your buck. Typically the biggest expense associated with this destination spot is the flight. It’s a long flight pretty much regardless of where you’re flying in from so it tends to be a little pricy. However once you shell out the money for your plane ticket, you’re pretty much in the clear.

You can score your own private room/villa with an infinity pool that overlooks the dense, gorgeous jungle for around $30 a night. That’s far less than you’re likely to spend on a room at the Hilton! The food and activities are also pretty cheap out there. Friends of mine that have been said they had a delicious four-course meal that consisted of fresh vegetables, seafood, fruit, and more for around $10 a person. “The meal would have cost us probably $100 each somewhere else,” my friend said regarding the meal. On average, you’ll only pay $1-$3 for your meals.

Given the affordability you’d assume that you’d have to sacrifice views or things to do but you’d be wrong. Bali has pristine beaches, gorgeous jungles, and tons of history and ruins to explore. Most of these attractions are free as well or will cost you a dollar to visit. People report that the most expensive part of Bali is the massage parlors but even a hot stone massage with essential oils will only set you back $7.

In no time short, you’ll be ballin’ in Bali (sorry not sorry).

2. Laos

Pha That Luang in Vientiane is the national symbol of Laos.

Like Bali, Laos is another one of those hidden gems. It’s one of those areas where you can get away with spending around $30 a day including food and accommodations. On average, meals around $3 in Laos and hostels run about $5 to $10 a day. Transportation is a little bit on the high side, but there are lot of things to see that are within walking distance, too.

Sight-seeing is also pretty cheap and rewarding in Laos. There are gorgeous waterfalls that you can visit, dense jungles to explore, and of course plenty of historical sights. For $7, you can also spend a full day tubing along the Vang Vieng river. The inner city is also really cool. There are plenty of shops to visit where you can find a number of handmade goods, spices, and tasty foods.

While there is quite a bit of concern throughout the community about the safety of Laos, those that have been (including backpackers and female travelers) say that they didn’t encounter anything dangerous during their stay. “Obviously you need to be careful about where you go and what you avoid, but that applies to anywhere. Even in the safest American cities, a wrong turn down a dark alley can lead to unpleasant experiences,” visitors say.

3. Cambodia

Angkor Wat in Siem Reap

If history and immersing yourself into ancient culture is your thing, then you need to check out Cambodia. The city is full of life, sleepy towns, delicious foods, and of course history. Cambodia is home to the infamous Angkor Wat ruins as well as other historical destinations that will pique your interest.

Cambodia is also incredibly affordable. Hostels as well as hotels tend to be pretty cheap; especially for what you get. Some hotels may run you around $50 a night, but you’ll have access to some great amenities like pools! You can also haggle with the locals in regards to travel, souvenirs, and in some cases food. Visiting a restaurant however means that you won’t be able to haggle for your meal like you can with some street vendors, but prices are typically very affordable so you probably won’t feel the need. A trip to Angkor Wat can set you back though. A 3 day pass will cost you $65, but with the amount of money you save elsewhere you can easily afford it.

4. The Philippines

The Ifugao/Igorot people utilized terrace farming in the steep mountainous regions of northern Philippines over 2000 years ago.

The Philippines is one of those hot spot tourist destinations that many assume cost an arm and a leg to visit. They’re not wrong, but it’s easy to navigate around the prices and visit the beautiful country on the cheap. You just have to be smart about it and do some research. For instance, traveling during the off season can save you a lot of money. And if you want to visit the beaches, don’t worry; they’re warm year around so even if you go in the middle of December, you can still soak up some sun. Booking your flights and planning your travel accommodations ahead of time can also save you big.

The country is home to a number of gorgeous islands that offer absolutely gorgeous beaches, fabulous dive spots, and some hidden gems that you’d have to shell out a pretty penny to see elsewhere. Travel to the islands and locations can get expensive ($10-$15 a trip) but if you’re smart about other aspects of your travel planning, then you can easily afford the cost of a boat ride to the island. And trust me, the views and beaches are totally worth the cost!

5. Malaysia

Malaysian Indians in Selangor

Malaysia is another one of those popular destination spots that a lot of budget travelers avoid because they think it’s too expensive; especially given the fact that the city is so well-developed and modern. However, you can stay in the city for as cheap as $10 a night if you find a hostel with a vacancy (which isn’t hard to do.)

There’s also plenty to do in Malaysia. As we mentioned, the city is incredibly well-developed and modern. You can check out chain stores, but you can also step off the beaten path (safely). Doing so will allow you to submerge yourself in Malaysia’s culture and cuisine. You can haggle the price of meals from street vendors, but on average you’re only going to spend $5 a meal so you might not even feel the need to. As far as attractions go, there are plenty of temples, islands, jungles, caves and more to see.

6. Georgia (Europe)

If you’ve ever wanted to travel to Europe but avoid going because of the costs, then look no further than Georgia. This European city is not only gorgeous, but incredibly affordable. And most tourists don’t even need a visa if they plan on staying a year! Now let’s talk price. Meals will run you an average of $3 and you can also travel around via the local mini-bus for about $1. There are tons of museums and historical sites to visit that will cost you less than $2 so you can fit a lot into your schedule without breaking the bank.

What all is there to do in Georgia, exactly? A lot of outdoor activities for the most part! As we mentioned there are museums and historical sites to visit, but the real draw is the hiking, monasteries, and gorgeous outdoor activities/views. You can hike through beautiful mountains, surreal valleys, and even check out some snow-capped peaks.

7. Cozumel

Mexico in general is one of the best places to travel to if you’re on a budget. However, not all cities are created equal and some can either be outrageously expensive or generally not safe. This is why you’ll want to stick to some of the “touristy” spots and do your research. While there are a bunch of cities we could have listed, we picked Cozumel. It’s not the cheapest city, but it is safe and you can visit it without shelling out a ton of cash.

Staying in Cozumel will probably be your biggest expense, but you can easily find hostels that will save you a lot of money. And in comparison to other tropical destinations, the hotels are far cheaper. Plus, you really can’t beat those beach views. Haggling is a big part of Cozumel culture so that can also save you big on souvenirs, travel, and activities. Some street vendors will also allow you haggle for food, but for the most part their prices are pretty reasonable. Tourist hot spots like Margaritaville will cost you a pretty penny, but you can easily eat up the local cuisine for far cheaper.

There is also a lot to do in Cozumel. There are outdoor markets, oxygen bars, dive spots, beautiful beaches, and historical sites to explore. Regardless of how long you’re staying, we can guarantee you won’t run out of things to see and do.

8. Nepal

Mount Everest, the highest peak on earth, lies on the Nepal-China border.

Now that we’ve soaked up plenty of sun, it’s time to cool off. And what better place to do that than Nepal? This is one of those mountainous, snow covered regions that really enchants you. It’s easy to get lost in the surreal scenery and fall in love with the kind hearted people of Nepalese. Kathmandu also has the bustle of a small, thriving city and you can quickly get swept up in the culture.

This beautiful place also happens to be one of the cheapest places in the world to visit if you’re looking for mountain trekking. Which let’s be honest: that’s one of the biggest draws to Nepal. The routes through the Himalayas are not only free, but they’re also incredibly well-supported and safe. Along the routes, you can find tea houses where you can stop to grab a bite to eat or even stay the night for cheap. This means that you won’t have to leave mid-hike to return to your hotel only to start your journey all over again.

Many tourists say that they’ve done a 7-day trek to Annapurna Base camp for under $20 a day without penny pinching.

9. Arizona

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon

If you’re looking to stay local, why not check out Arizona? Arizona is one of those gems in the United states that unfortunately gets overlooked. However, it’s an absolutely stunning state and regardless of what city you pick to stay at, you’ll have no problems finding something to do! The state also offers activities for all age groups, which can be a godsend for families.

To keep costs low, you’ll have to pick your accommodations outside of the tourist trap locations. For example, staying close to the Grand Canyon and other attractions will set you back a pretty penny. But if you don’t mind driving or spending some cash on a cab (which is generally cheaper than spending the night at some of these hotels), then it’s well worth saving the money. A room close to the Grand Canyon can run you $100+ a night whereas you can find a hotel room that’s close if not better for half that price if you travel outside of the city.

Mountains, deserts, museums, the Grand Canyon, rivers, and all sorts of outdoor activities and sites await you in this beautiful state.

10. Nicaragua

The Somoto Canyon National Monument is located in Somoto in the Madriz Department in Northern Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is one of those gems with so much to do that you’ll never get bored and you also won’t break the bank the either. Nicaragua is home not only to beautiful volcanic peaks, jungle treks, Mayan sites, and gorgeous beaches, but you can also find a number of crazy parties here too! Many backpackers herald this spot as one of their favorites. “It’s cheap, it’s easy to navigate, and it’s also safe,” many say.

How cheap are we talking though? Well, you can easily a score a room for under $10 a night. Hostels are even cheaper! As far as food goes, you can find street fare for under a dollar and it’s incredibly tasty. Many of the outdoor activities (beaches included) are also free. Travel is pretty affordable and many backpackers report that hitchhiking is safe and effective here as well. What about the parties though? Surely those are expensive! Nope. According to tourists, the alcohol is dirt cheap and many of the parties don’t charge admission. “Most of them take place on the street, beach or somewhere with empty space. So, there’s not really a point in charging admission. Even if you visit their clubs, admission is pretty cheap if they’re charging anything at all. And the alcohol is obnoxiously cheap so even if you pay a dollar to get through the doors, you can still stick your budget,” those who have been say.
