A Day at the Races
Many people head straight to the Eiffel Tower when they reach Paris, but it’s often more exciting to go a little off the beaten track. Whilst the Louvre certainly boasts a truly staggering collection, there are a myriad of lesser known museums to explore in Paris. One of the most charming is the Musée des Arts Forains. Housed in the immaculately renovated Pavillons de Bercy, this former wine warehouse is a true feast for the eyes. The museum has been open since 1996 and it hosts eccentric actor and antiques dealer Jean-Paul Favand’s personal collection. Everything this glittering collection lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in charm.
Everywhere you look, you’ll find another fascinating object. 19th century carousels play jangled music, as swans and golden horses rear and dive. Merry go rounds and old theater sets glitter alluringly; it’s even possible to ride some of the fairground pieces. The whole experience is star spangled and dreamy – it’s a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for adults.
Dream of the Waterlilies
If the Musée des Arts Forains is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for adults who are still young inside, then The Musée de l’Orangerie is a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for veritable grownups. This beautiful building can be found in the far west corner of the Tuileries Gardens and is the best place to see impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. The real stars of the show are of course, Monet’s Nympheas which are housed in two enormous rooms downstairs. The gentle curves of the walls help you to feel as though you are really captured in the paintings.
Once you’ve spent some time taking in the waterlilies, you should make your way downstairs to see some of the more modern collection. The colorful painterly brushstrokes of Cezanne almost leap from the walls, whilst Matisse’s playful lines spark joy in everyone who looks at them. Picasso, Renoir, Soutine and Guillaume also feature heavily. Though the collection isn’t nearly as enormous as that in the Louvre, the beautiful gallery space and the quality of the works on offer, means that its a true competitor.
