You’ve probably heard New York City called the “city that never sleeps” and for good reason. Regardless of what hour you’re out, there’s always something going on and the city is a constant bustling hub full of attractions. Whether you’re interested in being a part of the crowd at Times Square, catching a great show on Broadway, shopping at high-end luxury stores, or going back to nature at Central Park, there’s something for everyone.

Don’t let the hustle and bustle of the attractions keep you from experiencing the delicious eateries of New York though! So many times tourists and even locals are content to grab a hotdog from a local cart or a slice of pizza from a vendor. While these are definite New York treats that everyone should try at least once, you’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t check out some of their other restaurants. And there are tons to choose from! A quick Google search will return several pages full of local eateries and you can easily feel like you’re drowning in the amount of results. Eleven Madison Park

Eleven Madison Park is one of the best-known restaurants located in the heart of New York City. The restaurant offers a stunning view of the beautiful parks in Manhattan and is located at the base of a historic Art Deco building that really adds to the ambience of the place. Both locals and tourists flock to this place; and one look at the menu will quickly reveal why.

Eleven Madison Park attained a coveted best-in-the-world status and revamped their place over the summer. The redesign is incredible and reflects both the food quality and dining experience you can expect from this delicious eatery. Despite being closed for a short period of time, their fan base remained loyal. The space was also featured on Netflix’s “7 Days Out”.

Why should you visit?

The restaurant is known for its extravagant tasting menus that perfectly match the grand dining room and all its decadence. The eight to ten course format (yes, you read that right) were the brainchild of Daniel Humm who can be found commanding the kitchen.

Our favorite dish:

The menu changes quite often but one of the items that always seems to find itself on the menu is the black and white cookies. Despite sounding “simple” given the extravagance of the place, this dessert favorite is a must try.

Le Bernardin

In 1986 siblings Gilbert and Maguy Le Coze opened Le Bernardin in Gotham. Since its introduction, the eatery has upheld its swanky reputation and attracted visitors from all over the world.

While the whole place has a very retro formality feel, the main dining room really up plays the retro experience. Here you’ll find crisp white tablecloths, very formal and professional service, and a jackets required policy that really adds to the dining experience.

Why should you visit?

Eric Ripert, who presides over Le Bernardin, takes his job seriously and insures that the French seafood eatery delivers a truly remarkable dining experience. Their extravagant menu offers a large variety of tasting options, four course feasts, and delicious French seafood.

None of the above sound like it’s in your budget or you’re looking for something lighter? Check out their bar snacks menu whose items are equally stunning.

Our favorite dish:

While the whole menu is delicious, the Striped Bass is our personal favorite. It’s a Striped Bass Tartare that is paired with fennel, avocado, saffron crisps, and topped with champagne vinaigrette.

Masa

Masa is a Japanese restaurant specializing in tender, juicy sushi. The restaurant is owned by world-renowned chef Masa Takayama who opened the New York eatery once he arrived from Japan.

Wondering “what makes this sushi restaurant so special when there’s a billion others located five steps from each other?” The difference is the quality (and expense, but we’ll talk about that later). When Takayama arrived from Japan, he made sure to bring with him the traditional elements of sushi preparation. The chef only uses the finest, most flavorful seafood and in house sauces to set his dishes apart from other restaurants.

We should also mention that Takayama offers what is probably the most expensive dining experience in the history of New York.  How expensive? Well, a dinner for two can easily top $1,500.

Why should you visit?

While the check can be a little off putting, we assure you it’s well worth the price. Despite assumptions, Takayama isn’t overcharging for his meals; if anything, he’s overspending.

It’s also more than just overspending, the chef uses exquisite items, rare ingredients, and combines them using extremely labor-intensive techniques that only serve to add to the ambience of the meal. Each course is meticulously prepared and the sushi is so tender that it practically melts in your mouth.  This preparation makes for an absolutely mind blowing experience and some of the best food you’ll ever taste.

Our favorite dish:

While everything on the menu is extremely decadent and tasty, the wagyu with truffle is definitely a favorite. If you’ve never had wagyu beef, then be prepared to have your mind blown. The meat is heavily marbled, which offers a rich flavor and is tender enough to cut with a spoon. And Takayama’s treatment of the beef sets it apart from others.

 The NoMad

The NoMad is a beautiful restaurant that features five luxurious and uber nice dining rooms. These rooms surround a glass-enclosed atrium that really speaks to the ambience of the place and makes the dining experience that much better.

Coupled with elegant service and attentive staff, you can expect a truly fine dining experience at the NoMad. Given the restaurant’s overwhelmingly positive feedback and high ratings, it should come as no surprise that it is owned and managed by Daniel Humm and William Guidara. Humm also owns the world-renowned Eleven Madison Park (listed above) so you can rest assured that not only will your meal be incredibly delicious but that you will also have one of the best dining experiences of your life.

The NoMad combines casual elegance with a delicious assortment of matching foods and beverages. The menu is heavily inspired by Humm’s time spent in Switzerland, New York, and California and reflects his experiences in each.

Why should you visit?

Guidara and Humm’s haute-cuisine restaurant has perfected the art of French inspired food and ambience. The food choices are equally extravagant and decadent ranging from slow-cooked suckling pig that is incredibly juicy and tender to dry-aged jalapeno duck that offers a truly unique take on the classic dish.

And chances are if you’re a food lover you’ve probably read about the restaurant’s roast chicken. Food blogs, magazines, and people from all over the world can’t get enough of NoMad’s slow roasted chicken that is fall off the bone tender and incredibly flavorful.

Our favorite dish:

The roast chicken, hands down. While it probably sounds like a generic choice, especially when compared to others on this list, we can guarantee that you won’t find a better roast chicken anywhere.

Samba Kitchen and Bar

When compared to the others on this list, Samba Kitchen and Bar is far more laid back. However, this doesn’t mean that the food isn’t just as tasty as the others on the list! The restaurant advertises itself as “bringing the flavors of Brazil to Hell’s Kitchen” and has live Samba music on Wednesdays for those looking for a truly unique dining experience.

Unlike many of the restaurants featured, Samba also offers brunch from 12pm to 3:30pm so if you’re looking for a taste of Brazil and something between lunch and breakfast, you’ve found the right spot.

Why should you visit?

While dressing up and going out for a nice extravagant meal is nice, sometimes it’s cool to just plan a mellow day that includes a laid back restaurant that still offers quality food. And Samba Bar and Kitchen fills that role.

Most “affordable” restaurants often sacrifice quality in order to keep their prices low. Samba Bar and Kitchen definitely does not sacrifice quality; their food is rich in flavor, unique, and very well priced. You also aren’t limited to expensive cocktails and wines at this eatery. Their menu includes a number of fruity drinks, spirits, domestic and imported beers. There’s something for every palate.

Plus if you’ve never experienced true Brazilian cuisine, then this is a must stop!

Our favorite dish:

Normally we just pick food related items, but we also had to list their signature drink: the caipirinha. The caipirinha is Brazil’s national drink and for good reason; it’s delicious. The cachaca  (distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane) juice is can be combined with coconut, strawberry, or passionfruit for a truly tasty experience.

Food wise we highly recommend the espeto de carne. It’s a delicious grilled steak skewer, onion, and green pepper and served with tasty yucca fries.  The steak is perfectly seasoned, marinated and then grilled and we found it to be fork tender. As far as the yucca fries go they have a unique taste that you definitely don’t want to miss!

 Tempura Matsui

Looking for a quiet eatery that features traditional Japanese tempura? Then look no further than Tempura Matsui. This restaurant features a variety of delicious traditional Japanese tempura dishes and offers a casual, intimate dining experience that is perfect for couples as well as singles.

The restaurant is best known for what they like to call “the Matsui Way”. Grand chef Mr. Matsui created the style and the restaurant has remained loyal to the way of doing things.  Over the years they have perfected craft and make the lightest, thinnest batter possible to coat their dishes. “Just [enough] to coat the ingredient, and not weigh people down,” says the website.

Why should you visit?

Tempura is an extremely popular dish but most restaurants feature very little items that actually tempura battered and fried. And a lot of these plates can be so covered in tempura that it’s hard to taste the actual ingredient. Tempura Matsui uses just enough batter to give the food a delicate crunch and light flavor.

The ambience is also another reason why you should make this is a must stop on your New York City eatery list. The restaurant is small, quaint, and offers a very romantic setting. You can even have a seat at the sushi bar and watch your meal come together under the guidance of well-trained chefs right before your eyes.

Our favorite dish:

For dinner we recommend any of their four course meals, as they’re all truly tasty. However, the Tokusen Course is our personal fave. You’ll begin your meal with a Toro sashimi and seasonal starter. Next, the chef will bring you your choice of foie gras infused chawanmushi or seafood chawanmushi. We picked the foie gras infused chawanmushi.

The next part of the meal is the chef’s special selection of vegetables and seasonal seafood. We had crab, lobster, and shrimp. Last but certainly not least, you get your choice of tendon, cold udon, or tencha; all of which are delicious choices.

Bottom line

Regardless of which of the above places you decide to check out (though we suggest as many as possible), you’re sure to have a delightful and memorable dining experience.

It’s packed with flavor, smokiness from the grilled toppings, and the barbeque flavor screams summer. Plus once you take one bite of this delicious creation you’ll quickly understand why it’s the first on our list.

Toppings we recommend

Onions, thick sliced bacon, and mayonnaise were made for this juicy burger. You can also up the ante by adding a thick slice of cheddar cheese. In order to create the smokiness, we recommend grilling the onions, bacon, and burger buns.

2. Quadruple Chili Cheeseburgers

You’ve got to be a serious spice lover to attempt this messy monstrosity but if you do, be prepared for some out of this world flavor! You should also keep a glass of milk nearby if heat isn’t necessarily your thing. Not a fan of that much spice on your burger? You can also use less peppers and opt for pickled jalapenos instead of fresh ones to minimize the heat without sacrificing flavor.

High on flavor AND heat, this burger is perfect when paired with a frozen margarita on a hot day. Poblanos (or hatch chilis if you can find them), jalapenos, Serrano peppers, and chipotle peppers make this burger a spicy, juicy treat.

There are a few different ways of preparing the burger. You can opt for a traditional grill method then top the meat with the grilled peppers, or you can dice the peppers up and add them directly to the burger meat for added heat. We recommend the latter as it not only makes the burger even juicier, but it also insures that every bite is filled with delicious heat.

Toppings we recommend

While this bad boy is definitely good on its own, we suggest adding pickles for a nice crunch, chipotle mayo, grilled onions, and spicy pepper Jack cheese instead of cheddar or Swiss if you’re feeling extra bold.

3. Teriyaki Burger

Remember that Destiny Child’s song “Bootylicious”, particularly the “I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly” lyrics? Well, this mouthful of a burger is definitely reminiscent of those infamous lyrics. This burger is incredibly juicy so don’t skimp out on the napkins and paper towels or you’ll regret it!

If you’ve ever been to Carl’s Junior Burgers, Red Robin, Fuddruckers, or really any burger place then you’ve probably seen a teriyaki burger somewhere on their menu. At first glance it probably sounds kind of off putting; especially if they have it paired with a pineapple but bear with us if you’ve never tried one.

A lot of people add Worchesire to the burger meat before cooking it up for added juiciness and flavor. So why not add teriyaki instead? Not only does teriyaki add a unique flavor to your burger, but it also makes it incredibly juicy! You can add the sauce directly to the meat before cooking it or you can use it as a delicious topping once the meat has cooked. Or both; we don’t judge!

Toppings we recommend

You would be doing yourself and this burger a big disservice if you skipped out on the pineapple slice. Sure, the teriyaki burger is good without it but the pineapple slice takes it to a whole new level. For added flavor, grill the pineapple slice up!

Shredded lettuce, mayo, and cheddar cheese are perfect accessories for the teriyaki burger but honestly you can completely forgo the mayo; the teriyaki is juicy and flavorful enough on its own.

Feeling extra creative? Add a fried egg to the teriyaki burger! The fried egg plays nicely off of the teriyaki and pineapple flavors. We know that it sounds weird but trust us on this one.

4. The Hangover Burger

While this burger supposedly helps with hangovers, you don’t necessarily need one in order to enjoy this delicious treat! So how exactly does is it supposed to help with hangovers? When you’re hungover, you crave greasy food and burgers are perfect for that. They give you that “greasy” flavor you’re craving, but are hearty and the burger meat is much better for you than whatever oily treat your body thinks it needs. Eggs are full of protein, which help your body out when it’s been deprived of nutrients and also helps to settle your stomach.

Fried eggs on burgers have really become popular over the last few years and for good reason; they add a truly unique flavor to the burgers and compliment them perfectly. While it does sound off putting or strange at first, we promise the runny yolk is a perfect compliment for the burger.

Toppings we recommend

Honestly, the more toppings the better! This tasty burger pairs well with anything so pile on the condiments and call it an “everything but the kitchen sink” burger!

Our personal favorites for it? We like crunchy pickles, thick sliced cheddar cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, and grilled onions. Grilled onions, because of their greasiness, are perfect for hangovers. Not that you have one!

Oh, and don’t forget your glass of v8 on the side!

5. Grilled Black Olive Burger with Japanese Mayo

Yes you read that right. No, it’s not a joke. Yes, it actually does taste good. Yes, we’re serious. Yes, you should definitely try it. No, you probably shouldn’t tell your friends what’s in it until after they’ve tried it.

Okay, so this is hands down the strangest concoction on our list but it really is delicious despite the surprising ingredients. This Japanese inspired dish is actually a riff on the famous green olive burger from Wisconsin. And no, we hadn’t heard of it either but now we’re interested in trying it!

The burger meat is mixed with a Japanese black vinegar, or kurozu, that is much more mild than traditional vinegar. It still has the salty flavor, but is nowhere near as sour as the white vinegar we’re all familiar with.  When cooked/grilled up, the meat absorbs the flavor and the vinegar becomes even milder. So instead of a mouthful of vinegar and salt, you’re getting a rich bite of burger meat that’s incredibly juicy.

From here, the patty is topped with melted Swiss cheese and mayo that’s been blended with chopped black olives. The saltiness of the olives really takes the mayo to the next level and because they’re black olives, the flavor is very subtle.

Toppings we recommend

Honestly, the burger is perfect as is with the olive mayo mixture and the melted Swiss cheese. It’s one of those burgers that the less you add, the better. Strange, we know! While you might be tempted to leave off the black olives, we highly suggest you add them. They add a really unique and delicious flavor the meal!

If it still feels too “plain” for your tastes, try adding grilled onions for extra flavor.

6. Green Chili Burger

Yes, another spicy burger to add to your cookout list! But don’t worry; this one isn’t nearly as hot as the quadruple chili burger. It still possesses a nice kick thanks to the green chilis, but it is much more mild than our number 2 pick.

Just like the quadruple chili burger, there are a couple of ways you can go about preparing the burger. You can use the traditional grill method and then top the meat with the grilled peppers once it’s ready to serve or you can dice them up and add them directly to the burger meat for extra spice. The chilis will juice up as they cook inside the burger meat adding more juice (obviously) and of course more spice to the meat.

Keep in mind though that chilis get hotter when cooked; especially inside of the burger meat where they’ll be exposed to the grill longer.

Toppings we recommend

Grilled onions are a must for this burger! The sweet flavor of the onions perfectly balances the kick of the green chilis and adds even more smoke flavor to the burger. We also suggest pepper Jack cheese and chipotle mayo as these really play off of the heat of the green chilis.

However if you want to “calm” the burger down some, go with Swiss cheese and plain mayo. The burger won’t lose any of its charm or bold flavor, but it won’t be quite as tongue scorching either.

7. Hot Hawaiian Burgers

Okay, so this one is definitely a non-traditional burger, but it’s still a delicious menu option for your weekend cookout. It can also be a great alternative for those who don’t want a traditional meat patty: you can switch out the burger meat for grilled chicken, which is incredibly delicious! The burger packs a ton of flavor and creativity that you don’t want to miss so make sure you add this one to your menu!  

English muffins, grilled spam, thick burger patty, pineapple, Sriracha mayo, and melted Swiss cheese make this an absolutely unique experience. The saltiness of the grilled spam pairs really well with the acidic, sweet taste of the pineapple and makes it feel even more Hawaiian.

It’s also the perfect dish to serve up for a luau themed party!

Toppings we recommend

Honestly, this burger is perfect as is but if you feel like spicing it up, try adding a fried egg and sautéed onions. The fried egg pairs perfectly with the pineapple and really accents the saltiness of the spam.

Spam not your thing? Switch it out for a thick cut of grilled ham! The saltiness of the ham is reminiscent of the Spam but much more mild. The same applies to the English muffins. While in our opinion the muffins are the perfect accessory, sweet Hawaiian rolls also turn this dish up and add an element of “authenticity” to it.

Straight from the grill

While most of these recipes were obviously put together for the purpose of a weekend cookout or holiday grill session, they’re also great for a night in or can easily satisfy a burger craving.

When you think of vacation destinations in the USA, what comes to mind is probably beachy places like California and Florida, maybe Colorado for some skiing or a visit to Yellowstone Park. What usually doesn’t come up on the list is Montana. Which considering the fact that Montana is the 4th largest state in the United States with 147,000 square miles to explore, is a mistake.

Big Sky Country is home to a variety of breathtaking landscapes that include the Rocky Mountains, peaceful lakes, white water rapids rivers, snow capped peaks, lush prairies and beautiful national parks. Regardless of what you want out of your vacation, a quiet getaway or a week full of outdoor exploration, Montana can deliver a memorable trip.

Planning a trip now and got Montana in your sights? Well, take a deep breath before you plug “things to do in Montana” into your search bar because the results are outrageous! There’s enough to do in Big Sky Country to easily fill a month long retreat and still leave things unexplored. So to make things easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of must see places in Montana.

1. Glacier National Park

Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus), Glacier National Park, Montana Glacier National Park is prime mountain goat habitat and the day I hiked the trail, this one miraculously appeared. He was kind enough to stand motionless for several moments allowing me to capture him and this spectacular view of Hidden Lake near Logan Pass, Montana.

Glacier National Park is often called the “Crown of the Continent Ecosystem” and for good reason. This park has over 16,000 square miles of nature to explore and as the nickname implies, it’s home to a large variety of unique wildlife and plants. Not to mention, the views are breathtaking!

There are also hundreds of miles of hiking trails to explore that take you through the heart of the park and offer some stunning views of the area. Regardless of experience, there is a trail for everyone so whether you’re looking for a casual stroll through nature, or an intense hike that includes some rock climbing, you’re sure to find it here.

And because it borders Alberta and British Columbia, you can also hop across into Canada; provided you have a passport of course. But honestly with so much to do and see at this park, you probably won’t be tempted to leave.

Unique features/activities

Glacier National Park is home to a number of endangered and rare animals. Here you can find Canadian lynxes, grizzly bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and more. The park also has rivers and lakes to explore as well as tons of trails.

2. Virginia City

One glance at the image above and it looks like the set of Westworld or Tombstone. You wouldn’t expect that you’d be able to visit this place much less find activities to do here, but Virginia City is actually a must visit tourist spot in Montana.

At one time, this was once the largest town in the inland Northwest with a population of around 10,000. Once a booming gold town (over $90 million was hauled from the area between 1863 and 1875), the city’s population dwindled after the gold rush.

Instead of letting time claim the town and letting it rot, preservation of Virginia City began in the 1960s. Those who started the process wanted to make sure that the town kept its authenticity and remained free of commercialism. In other words, you won’t find a Starbucks here. Now, the town is home to over one hundred historic buildings that come complete with period furnishings/mementos. 

Unique features/activities

Painstaking care has been taken to insure Virginia City keeps its ghost town like appearance. You can also catch an authentic performance where the Virginia City Players dress in period clothes and put on a captivating performance at their opera house. You can also hop aboard a stagecoach for a ride.

3. Missoula

You know all those rustic looking photos of Montana that you see with the mountains in the background, lush green grass, big beautiful blue skies and silky smooth lakes? Well, they’re probably images of Missoula.

Called the “Garden City”, Missoula is home to a variety of outdoor activities that draw in nature enthusiasts from around the world. You’ll find this gem tucked between the Rocky Mountains and surrounded by picturesque views. Three rivers run through the area and there are seven wilderness zones to explore.

Need a break from nature and looking for some evening activities? Well, Missoula aims to please. This cultural hub offers everything from opera to roller derby to some of the state’s top museums. Looking to do some shopping? Check out one of their three shopping districts for souvenirs of your trip.

Unique features/activities

This is a popular place for fly-fishing, swimming, hikes, bike riding through trails, kayaking, boating, and more. Visiting during the winter? Then you can enjoy snowshoeing, skiing, and snow filled hikes.

4. Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

If you know anything about Montana, then you’ve probably heard of Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park. Not only is it Montana’s best-known park, but it was also the first to be founded. The caverns are lined with impressive stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helictites that make each room appear even more surreal than the last. Guided tours are also available for the caves if that’s your thing, but are only offered daily between May 1 and September 30.

Looking to spend more time here? Then check out the self-guided nature trail that takes place above ground to show you some of the cave’s impressive outer features or check out the ten miles of hiking trails that are also available. If you’re looking for a rustic stay, then check out one of their three campgrounds or plush cabins that are the reason the term “glamping” exists.

The caverns are home to some seriously impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Often touted as the “most elaborate limestone formations in the Northwest”, it’s easy to see from pictures why the caverns have earned that title.

Need to escape the heat? These caverns are naturally air-conditioned and will offer some much needed respite from the sun.

This park is one of the most visited places in Montana and for good reason. It stands as a memorial to one of the most famous battles in American history. In 1876, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the leadership of Sitting Bull collided. It was one of the last efforts made by Native Americans in order to protect their way of life. Now, the spot as well as Custer National Cemetery stand as a tribute to the lives lost and draws history buffs from all around the United States.

Pictured above, you can see the iron tribute to the Plains Indians, which is one of the most popular photo ops and spots in the park. You can also get a glimpse of the Crazy Horse Memorial that is currently being built in South Dakota (it’s very close to the state line so you won’t have to drive to see it.) The Crazy Horse Memorial is the world’s largest mountain carving in progress and will be considered the 8th wonder of the world upon its completion.

This expansive park has plaques that talk about the battle, graves, tipis, and breathtaking views of the stunning prairie lands. You can also visit the museum, which holds a number of exhibits related to the battle, Custer, Plains Indian life, archaeology, and more.

Chances are if you’re visiting Big Sky Country, you’re an outdoor enthusiast; after all, Montana is home to some of the most spectacular nature sites in the world. Like many of Montana’s parks, there are a number of activities to do. Fly-fishing, skiing, swimming, and hiking are just some of the things you can do here. The wilderness areas have flat plains with gorgeous views making them perfect for camping and gazing up at the stars at night.

So what makes Bozeman different from the rest of the gorgeous national parks? Well, for starters it’s located in easily one of the most eclectic cities in the state. Bozeman is home to Montana State University but the town has worked hard to maintain its Old West flair so the two have come together for a truly unique city. There’s plenty to do in the city if you check out the unique features/activities listed below.

The Museum of the Rockies is a must visit. It’s easily one of the most entertaining museums within the state and boasts a large collection of dinosaur bones, early American art and artifacts, living-history outdoor section, laser planetarium shows, and a well known brewery if you’re looking to grab an evening drink.

Big Sky is another one of those most visit places in Montana and like many of the other parks; it offers stuff to do year round regardless of the weather. The small town of Big Sky is about 45 miles southwest of Bozeman if you’re planning your trip out. The area is located high in the mountains, nestled by timberland forests, Spanish Peaks Primitive Area, and the Gallatin National Forest. In other words, there’s a lot to do and see here.

While it’s best known for its powder soft snow and crowd-free skiing, there is a lot to do in the summer. This scenic area offers a variety of outdoor activities that include whitewater rafting, blue ribbon trout fishing, backcountry hikes, empty trails that aren’t full of other tourists, horseback riding, mountain biking, and more. If you’re looking for somewhere that has everything you could possibly want and then some as far as outdoor activities goes, then Big Sky is a must stop.

The area is also a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and following a trail will put you less than an hour from its West Entrance. Many tourists often opt to explore Big Sky during the early hours and follow the trail into Yellowstone Park since it’s so close.

Big Sky features more than 5,800 acres of skiable terrain. These areas are spread across four towering mountains and are one of the best-known ski areas because of their powder-soft snow and minimal lines. In other words, you’ll spend more time on the slopes and less time in line.

8. West Yellowstone

If you’re going down our list, then you’ll end up in West Yellowstone should you stay on the trails in Big Sky. West Yellowstone is the gateway to Yellowstone National Park and from here, it’s a short journey into Yellowstone itself. And if you’re not interested in dealing with the crowds at Yellowstone Park, this area is perfect for experiencing some of the cool features of Yellowstone without the other tourists.

Here you can enjoy fly-fishing, hiking, four-wheeling, camping, swimming, horseback riding, and mountain biking in the summer. Visiting during the winter months? Hope aboard a snowmobile to tour the park or enjoy some cross-country skiing that the area is well known for.

Looking to experience some of Yellowstone’s features? Then check out the active hydrothermal areas. Here you’ll find hot springs, fumaroles, mudpots, travertine terraces, and geysers. You’ll also find Old Faithful, the most famous geyser on Earth, here in West Yellowstone. Of course, this area is densely populated so if you’re looking to avoid crowds, you’ll want to steer clear. Hungry or looking to do some shopping? The boardwalks of West Yellowstone can take care of you.

Why Do We Always Want New Clothes?

There are tons and tons of clothes out there for any budget. But what to do if you can’t seem to get enough? You like lots of clothes and you just wish to have enough money to buy them all. And this never ends, you are always craving for more.

This is a familiar situation for many women, so you are not alone in this. However, it is not out of the question for some men to feel that they never have enough clothes either.

But there is more to this than meets the eye. We are talking about regular people here with limited financial resources, not about millionaires who have nothing else to do than to shop the whole day long. So what could be behind this hunger for shopping clothes?

Whether you consider yourself to be a shopaholic or not, buying clothes can be some kind of addiction in itself. And it’s not only about filling your wardrobe, but it can sometimes indicate that you are trying to fill some holes in your own soul.

There are several possible reasons why a person always wants to get new clothes:

If you want to always be trendy, don’t hang on tight to that budget of yours because the trends keep changing fast. Also, many brands invent tends of their own so it is really though to keep up with everything from a financial standpoint.

Not to mention that it is pretty time-consuming as well to always look for updates from runways and new collections. It’s best to make peace with the fact that you can’t get the trendiest clothing items all the time and that is perfectly fine.

Also, be selective. Some hits might not be flattering your figure so focus on getting clothes that fit you nicely instead of anything fresh that might come up.

You might be displeased with certain aspects and feel that the day is not fun enough. So you find a source of entertainment in checking out the latest clothing items not only in your all-time favorite stores, but in as many as you can. You find this enjoyable and a relaxing way for time to pass by.

This can turn out to be a very expensive hobby so you might want to try some other fun activities as well. You might discover that they are more fulfilling and make you feel more alive than buying clothes you barely like and don’t even need.

Some people just feel empty inside and splurge on clothing purchases to make themselves feel better. It does help for a few hours, days or weeks. But then when you don’t see the novelty in those clothes anymore, the pain might come back so you start the search all over again.

It is important to determine if that happens to you too and to try to fix the issue that is bothering you so much. You might know it better than anyone that you are craving for some closure on a past unpleasant situation than for the newest jeans you find in H&M, so try to deal a bit with that before your budget will become endangered. 10 Strange and Unique Dishes from Around the World

What comes to mind when you hear “strange and unique dishes?” Is it the everything bagel sushi? Which if you’ve never heard of, the everything bagel sushi is a delicious Japanese-Jewish fusion composed of sushi rice, cream cheese, layers of smoked salmon covered in everything bagel spice for a truly unique experience.

Or maybe your mind drifts back to Andrew Zimmern, the beloved host of “Bizarre Foods” who calls things like stinky tofu delicious but refuses to eat the durian fruit. Well, if you’re thinking of some of the foods you’ve seen on “Bizarre Foods”, then the dishes on this list will come as no surprise to you.

1. Shirako

Let’s start the list off with a bang. Shirako is a Japanese dish that looks tasty and for the most part normal but once you find out what it is, it can be a turn off for some. The dish can be served raw, fried, steamed, or as a topping.

The Shirako, or the white part of the dish, is said to have a sweet, custardy taste and a slimy, spongy texture. Some of said the texture is reminiscent of sweetbread (brains) when eaten raw. Often served as an appetizer, Shirako is definitely an uncommon menu item so don’t expect to find it at your local Japanese restaurant.

 Is your curiosity piqued yet? Well, Shirako translates to “white children”.  Yes, you read that right. No, we’re not joking. The dish is composed of the sperm sacs of cod, angler, or puffer fish and is commonly served raw though as listed above there are other preparation options available for Shirako. What we really want to know is who came up with this dish?

Ok, we have to be honest here: this dish looks exactly what it is. There’s no disguising the fact that you’re eating a fertilized duck egg with a partially developed embryo inside. And yes, we realize that this one is probably pushing the limits of what we’re all willing to try, but it’s interesting enough to make the list.

We’re not going to discuss how the dish is prepared but we will tell you how it’s cooked and served. Balut is boiled and served in the egg with chili, salt, and vinegar. So how are you supposed to eat it? Well, chefs and lovers of the dish say that you first tap a hole in the top of the shell then enjoy the delicious liquid before eating the crunchy rest of the insides; which includes the embryo, feathers, bones, and even some bits of the shell.

On its own taste is supposedly reminiscent of a pungent, strong boiled egg but with crunch. The salt, vinegar, and chili are meant to mellow out the harsh flavor but in our opinion anything that requires that many strong additives isn’t going anywhere near our plates or mouths.

Another egg for our list! Okay, so this one is really intriguing and no you aren’t eating an egg that is a century old. However, you are eating an egg that has been sitting out for anywhere from a few weeks to a several months. Sound appetizing yet?

This Chinese delicacy consists of eggs that have been covered in ash, clay, and salt then left in the mixture for a stretch of time before being eaten. By the time the dish is served, the yolk is a dark green and the scent is reminiscent of sulfur. Delicious.

So what does it taste like? They taste like regular boiled eggs but on steroids; the flavors are full and supercharged. The gelatin, or what had previously been the white pat of the egg, supposedly doesn’t taste like anything; all of the flavor is contained in the yolk. To quote someone who has tried the dish, “it’s rather like eating a ripe Camembert, pungent and creamy, with a whiff of ammonia.”

We figured it was a good idea to break up the weirdness with something a little more palatable. Salo is a traditional and extremely popular Ukrainian dish. And chances are if you’re a big fan of fat and the smoky, juicy flavor of meat, you’re going to love this one.

Salo is the fat of the meat that is prepared, served, and eaten on its own. Yes you read that right: just the fat. Typically, Salo is made into slabs and smoked before being in a cool cellar for up to a year. This preparation allows the smoky flavor to really penetrate the fat. It also keeps the fat tender but together so it’s not some gooey, slimy mess that falls apart to the touch.

Once it’s ready to be eaten, it’s traditionally cut into thin slices and served with rye bread. The taste is said to be similar to hickory-smoked bacon that’s heavy in fat or the fatty part of a nice juicy steak that’s been grilled to perfection.

In fact, Salo is so popular that Ukrainians hold a festival of lard each year to celebrate it and from the looks/sounds of the dish we can totally understand why!

5. Jellied Moose Nose

If we’re being completely honest here, the dish doesn’t look any tastier than the name sounds. In fact, both are incredibly off putting but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a treat in Canada. Probably developed by someone who didn’t want to waste any part of the moose, jellied moose nose is a dish that highlights a less than desirable cut of meat: the nose.

More often than not, the meal is prepared by boiling the nose with spices, and onions until the nose hair can be removed easily. Once the hairs are removed, (because finding a hair in your meal is the most off-putting part of this dish), the nose is boiled some more until it is tender. From here, the chefs slice and cover it with a broth that turns the meat into a jelly consistency and it’s ready to be eaten.

Well according to chef Andrew Zimmern who has unsurprisingly tasted this dish, described the meat as “exploding ‘with little’ tastes’,” and likened the flavor to that of corned beef. So in other words, it tastes much better than it looks.

6. Crispy Tarantula

Alright, you knew we had to include some kind of insect delicacy on our list. For most Americans insects, particularly spiders, do not equal lunch. In fact, many Americans are arachnophobic so it comes as no surprise that crispy tarantulas aren’t part of most restaurants’ menus.

However, in many other countries around the world such as Cambodia, Vietnam and others, insects are a staple and integral part of meals. They are an abundant resource that always replenishes itself so there’s no fear of running out of food. Insects are also high in protein, cheap to eat/prepare/purchase, and taste like whatever they’re cooked in. Plus, they’re “travel-size” so to speak so they can be eaten on the go.

But what does a crispy tarantula taste like exactly? Well, as mentioned above it depends on the seasoning used. However some have likened the taste of these crunchy treats to that of crab.

Bear with us because everything about the next sentence is going to sound really strange and probably disgusting. Airag refers to a glass of fermented horse milk that is a beloved drink in Mongolia. Why? Well, because not only is it super tasty but it’s also alcoholic! Oh and for those of you who are lactose intolerant, this drink also means good news: since the milk is fermented, it won’t bother those with lactose allergies.

Airag is mare’s milk that has been fermented into a sour, fizzy, and slightly alcoholic liquid. So while you won’t get drunk off of it, you might catch a nice buzz, which is probably a must if you’re looking to have another glass of the stuff. Not surprisingly, the fermented milk has a sour, pungent taste but after the initial sip, it becomes very tasty. Some have compared it to sour cream, plain yogurt, and buttermilk.

Traditionally, Mongolians sever Airag chilled in a cup shaped like a bowl. Dregs are then supposed to be poured back into the main container once everyone has been served a glass.

Muktuk is one of those dishes that upon first glance looks “normal.” If it was served to you and you had no idea what it was, you’d probably think it was strips of fat or maybe a super white fish. While both of these are in the same ballpark, what Muktuk really is might surprise you.

Muktuk is a traditional Inuit meal and is composed of frozen whale skin and blubber. The fat of the blubber provides much needed calories and obviously fats that Inuits need to get them through the cold months. It can also be eaten when food is scarce and can be stored for a generous amount of time.

The dish has “layers” which you can see in the image above and each apparently has a unique taste. The skin, or darker layers, is slightly crunch and is said to taste like hazelnuts. The fat, or white layers, is chewy and tastes very fish but is tender. There are also protective layers between the skin and fat that is said to be even chewier than the fat and just as fishy. Smell wise there supposedly isn’t one so the struggle won’t be getting it to your mouth but rather swallowing it.

The dish pictured above looks pretty weird but tasty nonetheless right? Well, you might not think so after you find out what Huitlacoche translates to. In English, Huitlacoche means “sleeping excrement”. And if you feel like gagging at the name, we completely understand. Despite the off-putting name, the dish is actually pretty tame (and delicious.)

Corn smut is a type of fungus that affects normal corn kernels and turns them into the unusual looking blue-black puffs you see above. For most, this would mean that it’s time to throw the crop out but for Mexicans, it’s a chance to prepare a delicious treat. The dish can be served a number of ways but the most popular is to cook it in a skillet alongside onions, bell peppers and jalapenos then serve it with tortillas like a taco.

The taste is similar to eating mushrooms and other fungi: it’s delicate, soft, and has a very woody, earthy flavor. You can also still taste a hint of the corn alongside the delicious smoky flavor.

10. Hakarl

If you’re a fan of the Travel Channel and/or Food Channel, chances are you’ve probably heard of this dish. Everyone from Andrew Zimmern to the late Anthony Bourdain has experienced this delicacy and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive despite the preparation.

The Greenland shark, which on its own is strange looking, is beheaded and gutted before being placed in a shallow grave covered with sand and stones. After 3 months, the Hakarl is dug up, cut into strips, and dried before being served.

The biggest turn off regarding the meal is easily the smell and first-timers often gag when they come into contact with it. Because of the harsh smell, Hakarl is prepared far away from residential areas and kept in tight storages to prevent the scent from leaking out.

So what does it taste like? Well, that depends on the part of the shark you’re consuming. The soft white flesh from the body of the shark is said to possess a cheese-like texture while the belly meat, which is red in color, is much chewier. Those who have tasted it describe it as fishy, mild, or similar to bleu cheese.

But why try any of these foods?

After reviewing our list, this is probably the question that’s most digging at your mind (even though we were hoping it would be “when can I try these?” but hey we get it). Well the simple answer looks something like “you never know if you’ll like it until you try it”.

However, we think it’s important to sample dishes from around the world. Tasting a culture’s cuisine, even the strange ones, is the best way to learn about it and its people. So while the idea of eating fried tarantula might turn you off at first, it’s a great chance to mingle with locals and learn about their traditions. And chances are you might just discover your new favorite food!

Still not sold? Think about it for bragging/social media rights. You can be one of your few (or only) friends who has eaten moldy maggot cheese and lived to tell about it. Plus, these interesting dishes are definite social media attractants so you can expect a lot of attention on platforms like Instagram with the right tags and a picture of your unique meal.
