Netflix is one of the greatest things to happen to mankind in our honest opinion. If you don’t feel like going out to the movies, you can chill on your couch in your pajamas with a bowl of popcorn that didn’t cost $20 and watch movies to your heart’s content; all for anywhere from $8.99 to $15.99 a month depending on your preferences.
Did we mention that there are no late fees associated with Netflix? With archaic movie rental systems like Blockbuster, you were always in a scramble to return your film before the time limit was up and you were charged another full day. Even Redbox’s late fees have gotten pricy and if you wait too long to return the movie, Redbox will charge you full price for it. Ouch! Plus you don’t have to hop from Redbox to Redbox in hopes that the movie you really want to see hasn’t been rented. And don’t even get us started on the occasional scratched disks that won’t even play…
Oh and the best part? You can binge watch things on Netflix! You won’t have to wait for a new episode each week of your favorite show; you can sit down and watch all the seasons in one sitting. Of course, Netflix is usually a season or so behind on current shows but this isn’t really a strike against them.
However, Netflix definitely does have its downsides. Finding a good movie or series to get into is hit and miss. Some of the shows on Netflix are really good while others are just horrible. And if you’re into horror, you’re really going to have to sift through some seriously bad B flicks to find a gem. Rather than waste your time surfing for a good series to settle into, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite series that we know you’ll enjoy too! So grab your popcorn, slip into something comfortable, and get ready to binge.
Author’s note: We chose to focus on “less popular” series that you might not have heard of. So while Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Bigmouth, Breaking Bad, and Dexter are all binge worthy shows, we wanted to give you some different options to add to your queue.
1. You
You is number one on our list and for good reason; it’s seriously addicting! Based on the book series by Caroline Kepnes, this book turned series made its way on Lifetime then to Netflix and audiences were immediately hooked. It’s a really scary exploration of just how vulnerable we all are to manipulation and stalking.
What is it about?
You is about a young, beautiful woman who aspires to be a great writer. Her world is turned upside down when she enters a bookstore where Joe Goldberg works. Joe immediately likes her so he does what any normal person would do: Googles her thanks to the name on her credit card.
Lucky for Joe, but unlucky for the writer, there is only one Guinevere Beck in all of New York City and her social media accounts are both active and public. Joe can find everything he wants (and insists needs) to know about this woman in order to plan out his next move. And why wouldn’t he want to know her intimately? He’s in love with her and he just wants to be right for her.
Joe sees himself as a hopeless romantic willing to do whatever it takes to “protect” the one he loves. This quickly moves from making sure Beck eats properly to murdering those in his way.
2. Black Mirror
Black Mirror is one of those series that everyone talks about but doesn’t really understand. Most of the episodes are strange and intriguing, but a lot of them simply don’t make sense. (We’re convinced that many of them aren’t supposed to.) However, the episodes are all incredibly entertaining and addicting; it’s a very easy series to binge watch. Each episode is different but runs along a similar theme so you’re getting new content each time you press play.
What’s it about?
Because each episode is different, we’ll loosely explain the basic premises of the series. Black Mirror is a close inspection of modern society’s new technologies and the unforeseen consequences associated with them. It’s meant to be an eye opener and a cautionary tale about advancing faster than we’re meant to.
As we stated, the episodes are all stand-alone so there’s no continuous plot to remember. So it’s perfect for binge watching or watching in segments while you check out other shows without risk of “losing your place”. The setting is typically the near future or an alternate present. The episodes are very dark and often satirical, but there are certainly lighter episodes.
3. Riverdale
Riverdale is such an incredibly well done show and it’ll have you hooked from the very first episode. Does the name look kind of familiar to you? Or maybe the characters look like some you’ve seen before. Well, if you haven’t plugged this one into Google yet and seen their names, then we’ll tell you why it all feels very familiar: the show is based on the Archie comics.
What is it about?
Because it’s based on the characters from the Archie comics, you’re probably expecting something light hearted, funny, and revolving around the Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle. And you’d be wrong. While there is a bit of a love dynamic and some humor sprinkled in, the show is actually rather dark and focuses on mysteries surrounding the town of Riverdale as well as murders.
Oh and did we mention that Josie and the Pussycats are totally characters in the show?
4. The Sinner
For some reason, this mini series has been flying under the radar and we’re honestly not sure why. It’s intriguing, addicting, and will have you roped in from the very start of the journey. It’ll also keep you guessing the entire time and you definitely won’t expect the twists and turns that happen along the way.
What is it about?
The Sinner wastes no time getting right into the good stuff. A very depressed looking Jessica Biel sits on the beach with her husband and child. A song is playing and there are a group of friends enjoying themselves on the beach. Without hesitation, Jessica Biel grabs the knife she was using to peel fruit and stabs a dark-haired guy to death violently.
You’d then imagine that it’s cut and dry; she goes to jail and she’s going to be convicted of murder. After all, she did murder someone. But the further along the show goes, the more mysteries start to come up and you’re left to put the pieces together in real time alongside the other characters.
5. Stranger Things
You didn’t think we’d make a Netflix list of binge worthy series without putting this one on the list did you? Stranger Things is easily one of the most talked about series on Netflix and for good reason; it’s really damn good. Everything from the music to the overall atmosphere to the characters to the plot is top notch.
What’s it about?
Chances are, you’ve probably watched this series and if not, you probably know all about it. However, we’re going to go over the plot regardless just in case you’re behind on times and haven’t seen this one yet!
The story begins when a young boy mysterious vanishes from a small town. Everybody gets together in hopes of finding the young child but the more they investigate, the more dark secrets emerge regarding their town. Secret experiments, supernatural forces, hushed forces, an alternate reality and a strange girl with powers are just some of the mysteries the town must deal with.
6. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Tina Fey is one of the creative forces behind this feel-good series so if you’ve had any doubts about its quality, let us put your minds at ease: Fey is a genius when it comes to shows. And this one is definitely a showstopper and a comedy goldmine.
What’s it about?
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt centers around the main character Kimmy. She has spent the bulk of her life in a doomsday cult underground where she and three other girls were brain washed and held by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. The girls were kept underground for 15 years before they were rescued and now Kimmy must adjust to normal life outside of the bunker. She decides the best way to do so is to restart her life in New York City were things really pick up. Along the way, she befriends some interesting characters who help the always positive girl figure out her way around this new world.
7. Altered Carbon
Like Black Mirror, Altered Carbon is a very strange series that takes place in a technologically advanced future. However, the episodes aren’t standalone and if you’re looking for some background noise, then this isn’t the show for you as it actually requires you to pay attention. The plot is a bit difficult to follow, but it’s a really good series.
What’s it about?
Netflix has a really short “about” regarding the series: “A prisoner returns to life in a new body after nearly 250 years on ice. He has a chance to win back his freedom, but in order to do so he must solve a murder that’s puzzled even the best detectives.” While it’s certainly accurate, the series is actually much more complex and in depth than the synopsis gives it credit for.
Set in a dystopian cyberpunk future, a person’s memories and even their consciousness can be downloaded into new bodies. This means that for the most part, people are immortal and can continue to transfer “sleeves” (bodies) once their current one becomes too damaged. However should the stack (consciousness housing) be damaged, the person will die. The rest of the show is equally as strange.
8. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has earned itself a cult like following shortly after fans delved into the first episode, and for good reason. The show is really good! And since the creators of Riverdale are the masterminds behind this show, our favorite teenage witch has gotten a dark makeover to appeal to older audiences.
What’s it about?
Sabrina’s 18th birthday is rapidly approaching and she must choose whether she will continue to live as a human or embrace her witch side and sign her name in the Book of the Beast. The whole show focuses on Sabrina’s struggle to reconcile her dual natures and we see a return of familiar faces like Hilda, Zelda, and even Salem.
However, the show becomes much darker and much more complicated than just balancing mortal life with witchy tendencies; Sabrina bumbles her way through witchcraft and mucks things up that she’s trying to fix. Full of twists, turns, and really dark moments, this is definitely a crowd pleaser.
9. The Haunting of Hill House
If you took one look at the title and thought to yourself, “another generic haunted house show,” then you’re doing yourself a major disservice. While the basic premise does center around a haunted house, the series is actually much more sophisticated and full of mystery. From start to finish you’ll be on the edge of your seat! And the fun doesn’t stop once the series is complete either; there are a ton of fan theories and hidden ghosts to discover.
What’s it about?
In 1992, Olivia and Hugh Crain move themselves and their four children into Hill House. Their original goal is to revamp the mansion then flip it for a profit in order to build Olivia’s dream house. Of course, repairs take longer than normal and the family is seemingly stuck in the house as more and more issues arise.
During their stay, the family experiences a lot of paranormal activity that they can’t explain. This activity also results in a terrible loss and the family flees the house. 26 years later, the Crain children and their estranged father come together after another tragedy hits the family. They are then forced to confront the house and the effects it had on them.
10. Norsemen
Norsemen is a ridiculously hilarious show that will have you stitches the whole way through. While it’s mostly a comedy, there are some serious moments and there’s definitely a plot that involves more than just silly antics.
What’s it about?
The show follows the people of Norheim who like other Vikings, enjoy the finer things in life: raiding, pillaging, plundering, and partying. However, there are a lot of laughs to be had along the way.
The series focuses on several characters, but the central one is definitely Orm who is the brother of the village’s chieftain. Orm isn’t your typical Viking; he’s no good at raiding (he has a sore back), sucks at fighting, and is just generally a bad leader in his brother’s absence. However, he does have some “brilliant” ideas to improve the village and the quality of life for its residents. The rest of the show follows Orm’s less than intelligent ideas and the hilarious “struggles” of the Vikings.
