Romantic Weekend Getaways

Need a break from the stresses of everyday life but can’t get away from the office for too long? Want to spice things up with your significant other and break out of your routine? Then we have the solution for you: a romantic weekend getaway!

A vacation doesn’t always have to be something that’s five or more days at an exotic location nor does it have to take months of planning (and financial commitment.) Many people have begun turning to the idea of a romantic weekend getaway. They’re generally very inexpensive, gives you a nice break from work and responsibilities, and most won’t break the bank.

Plus there are a ton of dreamy weekend vacation spots that are rather close to home; the United States is full of gems that are perfect for couples that are looking for a short break. We should also mention that weekend getaways are the perfect refresher! Your work performance will definitely improve with a weekend vacation.

Of course, this doesn’t have to rule out trips to the Caribbean or other exotic destinations; you can book your flight early and return late. The only problem we foresee with this, is that you might wish you’d had more time to soak up the sun, lounge by the pool, and sip fruity drinks.

1. Cancun, Mexico

Cancun, Mexico

Depending on where you live in the United States, Cancun is just a short flight to a tropical destination. For those of us who live in Houston, Texas, it’s a short 2 and ½ hour flight away making it the perfect weekend getaway.

While Cancun has definitely earned a reputation as a party city and attracts college students from around the world, this beachy paradise isn’t just limited to drinking and parties. You can enjoy miles of snow-white sand, take a dip in cool pristine waters, or relax poolside at your luxury resort.

Cancun is also one of the safer Mexican cities to visit and most of the locals speak English so if safety and language barriers are a concern, then this is a great place to getaway to for the weekend.

Best activities?

Cancun offers some world class snorkeling and scuba diving so we highly recommend you do one or both. You’ll be able to see tons of bright tropical fish, gorgeous water plants, and amazing coral formations. Looking for nightlife? Cancun has a ton! There’s everything from beach parties to dance clubs to bars. Or you can also chill out with a nice dinner at a restaurant overlooking the beautiful waters.

2. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is the perfect place for a romantic weekend getaway. Not only is the city located in the United States and easily accessible from any airport, but the eclectic city also has a variety of things to do so you and your partner will have no problem finding something to do.

The city is rich in culture, history, and is full of life. Once you step foot into New Orleans, you’ll immediately feel at home and miles away from your responsibilities. The city has the tendency to suck tourists up and completely immerse them in the experience.

Keep in mind that New Orleans is also notorious for crime and panhandlers. Sticking to the well-worn paths of the city and not deviating from tour guide suggestions will keep you safe. In other words, use common sense and don’t travel down the alleyways at night!

Best activities?

We’re going to have to list Bourbon Street. Whether you visit it at night and partake in the party scene or go during the day is up to you, but you need to do at least make one trip there. Oh, you should also be prepared to be showered with beads regardless of what time you visit!

If you’re into history, why not check out some of the local plantations? Oak Alley Plantation is one of the best to visit. Here tour guides dress in period clothing and take around the large property. Oak Alley Plantation is also where Gone with the Wind was filmed.

3.  San Diego, California

San Diego, California

If you’re a fan of lists and an avid reader of our posts then chances are you’ve seen San Diego, California come up a lot! That’s because this city has so much to see and do that it could have a list all of its own and still not cover half of the activities that there are to do.

Like New Orleans, San Diego is accessible from any airport so chances are you won’t have to change planes mid trip and eat up precious time that could be spent on your vacation. It’s also a very safe city that offers lots of clean public transport so that’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about.

San Diego is also very budget friendly offering romantic hotels and restaurants that are affordable. There are also a number of free and nearly free activities that you can enjoy so don’t worry about breaking the bank!

Best activities?

Of course we’re going to suggest the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari park. Both of these places are extremely cool; especially the safari. You’ll get up close and personal with a variety of animals and get to see them in natural habitats.

Feel like relaxing? Head over to La Jolla for some sun, sand, and water. Here you can lounge on the beach to your heart’s content while being in walking distance from some great local shops and eateries.

4. Staycation

Staycation

Staycations have been a growing trend over the last few years and we only expect them to grow in popularity. So what is a staycation exactly? It’s the notion of staying in a hotel in your city and exploring it as if you were a tourist. Some couples even adopt different personalities for the getaway and pretend to be other people. So tell Chris P. Bacon to pack his bags and get ready for an adventure!

In addition to offering you the chance to see attractions in your local city that you may never have gotten a chance to see, staycations are also incredibly inexpensive. You won’t need to shell out money on airfare or a rental car, and you also won’t need to fill up at the pump multiple times along the way to your destination. And unless your city is New York, you won’t be paying through the nose for a hotel either.

Best activities?

Sit down your significant other and take turns picking out activities you’ve both always wanted to do. For instance if you live outside of Houston like us, then you know there are certain areas you want to avoid during the week (and even weekends) because the traffic is nightmarish. Book your hotel close to these locations and take advantage of the ability to get to and from them without being trapped in the traffic!

5. Avon, Colorado

Avon, Colorado

Colorado is one of the most romantic getaway spots in our opinion. Nothing beats sitting in front of a fire, snuggled up under warm blankets sipping hot chocolate while the snow falls outside of the large windows. It sounds like something directly out of a Nicholas Sparks book, right?

Avon is a large yet quiet city that allows you to feel completely immersed in nature. Here you’ll find romantic hotels, have dinner by candlelight at some truly delicious restaurants, and just enjoy some one on one time surrounded by the beautiful landscape. The focus is on the two of you coming together and there aren’t a lot of distractions. So whether you’re walking hand in hand to your dinner or admiring the views as you traverse the trails, your attention will be centered on your partner.

In short, Avon, Colorado is the romantic getaway destination.

Best activities?

Since you’re in Colorado, it would be a shame if you didn’t participate in at least one winter themed activity. The state also has some of the best skiing in the world so you and your partner should definitely hit the slopes!

Planning a trip during the warmer months and don’t want to bundle up? Avon has some truly gorgeous hiking trails that offer breathtaking views of the dense forests and snow capped peaks.

Want to wow your partner? Plan a romantic picnic at the beautiful lake or at the top of a hiking trail.

6. Naples, Florida

Let’s be honest; a weekend getaway list wouldn’t be complete without adding at least one Florida location to the list. After all, Florida is the quintessential weekend getaway destination, and for good reason. And Naples is the quieter, more “adult” version of Florida so you won’t have to worry about a ton of tourists or kids.

Here you can enjoy the soft sand beaches and turquoise waters of the Gulf while strolling hand in hand with your partner. You can also kick back and relax on a beach towel or lounge chair and just watch the world go by. Plus there’s just something so magical and romantic about sitting together and listening to the sound of the waves crashing into the shore.

Whether you’re watching the sunrise or set or just kicking back on the beach, Florida is a great place to unwind, spend quality time with your significant other, and simply relax without feeling pressured to do stuff. After all, you’re on beach time!

Best activities?

Obviously the beach is a must visit. We highly suggest you come during the early mornings. Watching the sun come up over the waves is truly breathtaking! Early morning is also the best time to collect shells as the tides have just gone out exposing some really great ones.

Depending on your hotel, you can also hit up a couple’s spa for some pampering or take a dip in an adult only pool. Or if you opt for the Naples Resort, you and your significant other can float in tubes along the lazy river.

7. Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel, Mexico

Like Cancun, Cozumel is a beautiful island vacation spot that won’t break the bank nor will it eat into your travel time in the way that traveling to the Bahamas or Cayman Islands would. Obviously this translates into more time spent on your vacation and less time spent getting there, which is always a bonus; especially when it come to weekend getaways.

Cozumel is a very touristy area so you can expect friendly locals and most of them speak English. Cozumel also offers public transit via buses but honestly you’re able to walk to most of your destinations comfortably. Worried about safety? Cozumel is one of the safer Mexican cities so as long as you use common sense and don’t wander down any dark streets, you’ll be fine.

Best activities?

You’ll definitely want to spend some time in the water and on the beaches in Cozumel. Snorkeling here is fantastic as you can see straight to the bottom of the water because it’s so clear. This means you’ll be able to see a variety of animal and plant life. You can also cruise over to Paradise Island where the infamous Corona commercials are filmed if you’re looking to unwind on the beach.

The open-air market in Cozumel is also cool and you’ll definitely see it regardless of where you stay since it’s the main part of the city. Here you’ll find all sorts of handmade crafts, delicious restaurants, street musicians, shops, and even an underwater oxygen bar. There are no shortages of things to do and places to explore in this beautiful city!
