7 DIY Beauty Ideas for a Girl’s Night in

When it comes to spending time with the girls, sometimes there’s nothing better than planning a chill night at home. You can watch movies, drink wine, bond, and enjoy some DIY spa treatments. Plus, you don’t have to spend a fortune so it’s a great budget friendly option for spending some quality time with the ladies. Also, you won’t have to yell over others at a bar or club to be heard. So you can spend your time chatting, catching up on gossip, and just enjoying each other’s company.

So are you ready to plan your next girl’s night in? Then we have the perfect beauty ideas for you and your friends! Keep in mind that these recipes are all ones you and the girls can prepare together but you can also prepare them ahead of time if you want to skip the prep and get straight to the spa treatments! However in our experience we’ve found that all of our girl friends absolutely love preparing their own spa treatments and taking them home after.

Set the mood

Set the mood

Before we get started with the list, we’d like to remind you to set the mood. You don’t have to do anything over the top (unless you want to in which case we are definitely there for it) but some décor will go a long way! After all, you want to create a relaxing environment for you and your girls.

We suggest setting out bottles of champagne and wine (Rose’ is perfect for a girl’s night in), flower petals, cute glasses/cups for drinks, fancy bowls for treats, and balloons/streamers are great decoration ideas. You can pick a lot of this stuff up at Party City, Michael’s, and Amazon.

You can also set up a DIY treat and drink station (think fresh fruit for wine and cotton candy), toppings for an ice cream sundae, etc. The ideas are endless and you can check out Pinterest for more ideas.

Don’t forget the ambience either! You’ll want some good music in the background or a movie or two that you will all enjoy. You can also opt for music in the beginning for the spa part, and then movies after you’re all relaxed.

1. Salt Body Scrub

Salt Body Scrub

Are you as obsessed with Lush’s Ocean Salt as we are? Then you’ll absolutely love this one! It’s very reminiscent of Lush’s Ocean Salt and the ingredient list is pretty simple. There are ones that are a little more complex (and arguably closer to Lush’s recipe), but this is our personal favorite.

Recipe

  • 1 tablespoon Shea butter or coco butter
  • ½ tablespoon vodka
  • ½ tablespoon lime
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • ½ cup course sea salt
  • 1 ½ cups fine sea salt
  • 1-2 drops of blue food coloring (or dye of your choice)
  • Mason jar

Mix all the liquid ingredients first except the blue coloring. Next you’ll want to add the salt and stir all of it together until it’s properly mixed. Now, add the blue coloring 1 drop at a time and stir until you reach the color you want. Transfer the mixture from the bowl to a mason jar and you’re done!

To use, wet skin thoroughly and then massage onto your body, rubbing the salt scrub in circles to slough off dead skin. Afterwards, thoroughly rinse your skin and admire how soft and silky it feels!

2. Banana Facial Mask

Banana Facial Mask

Okay so there are a ton of facial mask recipes that you can find online and we say a ton, we probably mean thousands. They range in ingredients and what they’ll help your skin out with but we’ve found that the banana facial masks are our favorite. They’re very relaxing, soothing, and good for all skin types. They’re very hydrating but not oily so you don’t have to worry about drying out your skin or oversaturating it.

Recipe

  • Whole banana sliced
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons yogurt (unflavored, unsweetened)
  • optional: 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of ground oatmeal)

Peel and slice the banana into small slices (this makes it easier to mash). Mash the banana into a fine mush and then add the other ingredients and mix well. Once it’s fully mixed, apply to your face and leave on 25-30 minutes. A few minutes into the mask, you’ll want to massage the ingredients into your face again to encourage your skin to absorb the mask.

With this recipe, you’ll have leftovers to pack away in a mason jar and take home! If you don’t want to take the mask with you, which will need to be refrigerated, then cut the recipe in half.

3. Lavender Mint Bath Soak

Lavender Mint Bath Soak

We’ve tried tons of bath soaks and lavender has always been our absolute favorite. It’s relaxing, soothing, and the scent is dreamy. However, we’d never really considered adding mint to the mix until one of our friends suggested it. Now, we’re completely on board with this combination. Plus the ingredients in this bath soak are incredibly hydrating and soothing for your skin so if you’re looking for a good bath soak for the winter, then this is the one.

Recipe

  • 2 cups Epsom salts (we prefer the non scented because we’re adding our own scents to it.)
  • ½ cup finely ground oatmeal
  • ½ cup baking soda (optional)
  • ¼ cup coarse sea salt (optional)
  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil (you can add more or less depending on your scent preferences
  • 10 drops mint essential oil (again, you can add more or less depending on your scent preferences)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (almond, jojoba, argan, etc. can be substituted)

Ready for the easiest, simplest recipe on this list? Well here it is: mix all of the ingredients thoroughly in a bowl before transferring to a mason jar to take home. Super simple, right? We also suggest using ¼ cup per bath for maximum results.

4. Strawberry Sugar Lip Scrub

Strawberry Sugar Lip Scrub

Lip scrubs are one of our favorite beauty supplies; especially during the winter when our lips are super chapped and lip balm can’t even help us out. This is another super simple recipe but you will need something a little smaller than a mason jar to take the leftovers home! We recommend Jell-O shot cups with the lids or lip balm cups.

You can also swap out the flavor for one of your choice or opt for none at all; after the all, the sugar is sweet enough on its own.

Recipe

  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil (you can also use olive oil)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 ½ teaspoons granulated white sugar (or cane sugar if you’re feeling fancy)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 strawberry (you can also use flavored balm oils instead)

In a small bowl mix the coconut oil and honey. In a separate bowl, crush the strawberry using the back of a spoon and mix in the lemon juice. Now, you’ll want to add in the sugar. Be careful not to over mix as this can cause the sugars to dissolve. Using a spoon, transfer the mixture to the Jell-O cup or lip balm cup.

In order to use the scrub, simply rub it onto your lips and leave for a minute or two. Then you’ll want to massage the ingredients in circles to exfoliate away the dead skin. Wipe, rinse, or lick (we don’t judge) the remaining scrub away.

5. Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask

Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask

Like most of the recipes we’ve included on this list, there are a number of hair masks out there you can try. This one is our personal favorite (and it smells so good), but ultimately what each girl’s hair needs are will depend on what recipe you use. This one is good for damaged hair that’s fine to medium. We suggest picking out a few different recipes to try and allowing the girls to pick their favorite.

Recipe

  • 2-4 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons unflavored, unsweetened Greek yogurt
  • optional: 1 drop of vanilla essential oil (please don’t use artificial fragrances in the mask; they may not blend properly and can dry hair. Essential oils are hair friendly and vanilla pairs well with coconut)

Mix all of the ingredients together and apply in small, even sections to your clean, damp hair. If your hair and scalp is dirty, the ingredients won’t penetrate your scalp as easily and strands as easily. Make sure to work the ingredients into your scalp! It deserves some love too! Leave in for about 30 minutes and cover your hair with a shower cap. Once the time is up, thoroughly rinse, shampoo, and condition your hair.

While this one probably isn’t ideal for a girl’s night in, it’s easy enough to make and bottle up for your girls to take home to use later.

6. Coconut Oil Solid Lotion Bars

Coconut Oil Solid Lotion Bars

Admittedly, this probably isn’t a recipe that you and your girls can do together; it’s more of a one-person thing. However, these lotion bars make cute party favors and you can put together a little gift bag for each girl that includes one of these bars. Also with the way the recipe is set up, you’ll want to pick a neutral scent or one that everyone can agree on. Vanilla and lavender are usually safe scents so we suggest using one of those!

Recipe

  • 1 cup beeswax
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 10-15 drops of essential oil

Begin by breaking the beeswax into small chunks. This will help it melt evenly and quickly. Next, heat the beeswax and coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat stirring frequently. After the beeswax and oils have melted, add the essential oils. Add a few drops at a time, stir, smell, and repeat until you get the desired scent. Once you’re done, pour the mixture into your mold or a muffin tin and let cool/set. You can speed up the process by putting into the fridge.

Keep in mind that this recipe will make around 6 decently sized solid lotion bars. You can alter it as needed depending on your mold and how many girls are attending. Just make sure that you use equal parts beeswax to coconut oil.

7. Cooling Foot Mask

Cooling Foot Mask

We’re going to be honest here; this one is VERY messy. So if you’re doing it with the girls, it might be best to move into the bathroom or kitchen where you can easily clean up the mess. Towels and bowls to rinse your feet up are also recommended because the mixture is very slick so trying to walk across the floor to the bathroom can spell disaster and make a mess!

Recipe

  • 2 cucumber
  • 7 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)
  • 1 banana
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup finely ground oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)

Start off by peeling the cucumber and banana. Next you’ll want to combine all of the ingredients in a blender and mix until soft. Once you’ve blended all of the ingredients, transfer equally to two large plastic freezer bags. Place a foot in each bag and secure it with rubber bands. Let your feet sit for 5 to 10 minutes then thoroughly rinse. You’ll be amazed at how soft your feet are!

The above recipe should be enough for 2-3 girls so adjust accordingly.

Bonus treats

Bonus Treats

Want to amp up your girl’s night in? Then look up a list of massages that you can and your friends can practice on each other! Put together a list that includes a variety of different massages (foot, back, deep tissue, hot stone, etc.) and hand each girl a list so that they can pick out their favorites that they want to try. Then take turns giving each other a nice relaxing massage.

No girl’s night in is complete without a mani/pedi. Set up a station with a variety of colors; we suggest asking each girl to bring a couple of her favorites so you can all swap polishes. You can let each girl paint her own nails or you can all take turns painting each other’s nails.
